Jess's POV
'What have I gotten myself into?' She's out cold. I carry her bridal style.
"Damien, I need you to open the door." Damien is shocked. He isn't listening to me; he's staring at his mother.
"Damien! Please open the door. Your mama needs to rest." When he hears mama, Damien snaps back and opens the door. I place her on the seat. 'What do I do now? Call the cops, right? Yep. Definitely.' I pull out my phone and start to dial.
"9-1-1. State your emergency."
"Yea. I have a woman with me. She's been beaten or something. We're-"
"No cops!" Damien yells. "No cops! No cops! Daddy's a cop!"
"Umm." Jess is speechless. She hangs up the call and looks at Damien.
"What do you mean Daddy's a cop? Your dad did this to your mom?" Damien looks terrified. He starts chewing his lip and crying. He nods his head.
"Daddy's mean. Me and Mama left Daddy. Daddy found us and hurt Mama. Will Mama be OK?"
"Yes. I'm gonna help you and Mama. Stay here with her. I'm going back to the store to get some things." I leave the kid with his mom. 'What the fuck? Her cop husband beat her. She definitely needs help. She needs medical attention. OK. I can do this. I can help them.' Jess walks back in the store but this time armed with a cart and a plan. She goes to the pharmacy area picks up the strongest OTC pain killers she can find, wraps for the woman's ankle, bandages, ointments, and assorted first aid items. She goes to the picks up some quick frozen meals and goes to the register. On her way out she spots her forgotten hand basket from earlier in the night. 'So much for a relaxing night.' Jess quickly walks to her car and deposits the goods. She gets in a pulls up next to the pitiful looking Cayenne.
"Damien. i'm back. Is there anything in the car that you or your mom needs?" Damien nods yes and points to the trunk. Jess pops the trunk pulls a solitary duffle bag out the back. She places it in her trunk. Next, Jess gets the woman out the SUV and lays her gently in the backseat of the Civic.
"Damien. Do you wanna sit up front with me or in the back with your mom?" Once again, Damien communicates without speaking. He walks to the back of the car and gets in and puts his mom head in his lap. 'He's smarter than his age.' Jess makes sure he's strapped in before she pulls out the lot.
Jess hightails it home without breaking any traffic laws. 'Can't draw attention to myself but I've got to get home fast.' Times like these make Jess hate that she lives far from her parents. Every so often, Jess is reminded of her cargo. The sound of the woman's moans and Damien's cries make Jess's skin crawl. Finally, Jess pulls into her gated driveway.
"Hey, Ms. Rikards. Long night?" The night guard comments.
"Yup. Have a good night. Stay vigilant." Jess nods at Larry as she pulls up the long driveway. The massive house at the end of the driveway looks lonely. Jess parks in the attached garage. She quickly gets out the car. 'How am I going to get everything and everyone into the house?' Both mother and son are asleep in the back.
'Guess I'll start with the bags. No need to wake them, yet.' Jess makes quick work of bringing the bags in. She quickly puts the food away. Next, Jess takes the makeshift first aid kit up to the guest room nearest her own bedroom. She lays the kit on one side of the bed.
'Should I draw a bath for them? Fuck it, I know I would want to soak for a bit.' She walks into the en suite bathroom. She bypasses the shower and goes to the big claw foot tub. She runs the taps.
Judith's POV
'Where am I?' I open my eyes slowly. The most beautiful boy is sleeping above me. my little prince has dried tears on his face. 'We survived but at what cost to Damien? I never wanted him to see me like this or see his father like that.' I gingerly lift my head out of his lap and sit up slowly. My head hurts like hell but at least I'm awake. We must be at the woman's place. It looks like a garage. A pretty big one. It looks like a four car garage or a mechanic's shop. There are car parts and bicycles hanging from the walls, a few motorcycles leaning against the far wall, and speakers hanging everywhere.
'Who is this woman?' I gently wake Damien. I don't know anything about this woman; we might still be in danger. 'Just my luck, right? Out of the pan and into the fire.'
"Sweetie, wake up."
"Mama! You're ok!" Damien springs up and embraces me.
"I'm fine, baby. But let's try to be quiet." I open my car door and get out. Damien does the same on his side. Damien and I make our way to the door attached to the home which I'm starting to think is a McMansion. We walk down a hallway into a huge living room.
The living room is decked out like an ideal bachelor's pad. Mega speakers and a phenomenal sound system are front and center. A projector hangs from the ceiling in front of movie theatre seats. 'This woman is paid. I wonder who she is?' The mantel holds no pictures. A huge staircase leads to the second floor.
I spot a closet off to the side. I turn to Damien. He makes a face; He knows what I'm going to say.
"Listen, baby. I want you to hide in the closet. I'm going to find her. If you hear any screams, you run. Don' look back and don't come get me. Promise me!"
"I promise, Mama." With that, I put my son in the closet and go up the staircase.
'What has my life come to?'
