Chapter 3
Leah's Point of View
"Happy birthday, Allie!" I walked in as Allie ran up to me. "Can I open the present?" She asked excitedly. I smiled. "You got to ask your mom." I told her just as Marissa walked over to greet me.
"Mom!! Can I open the present Leah got me?" She asked, eagerly. "Everyone hasn't arrived yet. We will open the presents after we have cake." Marissa told her. She pouted before running away to her friends. "She has a diva attitude." I joked. Marissa laughed and nodded. "She takes after her father." Marissa said. For the past five minutes, Marissa kept looking at her phone and looking outside. "Who are you waiting on?" I asked, walking over to her.
Before she could say anything, the front door opened. "Cole!" We heard Allie squeal before running past us. We walked into the living room and the guy named Cole picked up Allie. "There's the birthday girl! Happy birthday!" Cole told her before setting her down.
Allie got so much more excited since he arrived. "You are twenty minutes late." Marissa whispered to him. He frowned. "Sorry. Ashley and I broke up last night and the rest was rough." Cole tried explaining himself. Marissa softened up and looked at him concerned.
"I'm sorry." She said. Cole shrugged It off. I seen that look before. He's hurting. Even though I don't know who he is, I can tell from experience.
Marissa then turned to me and gestured for me to come over. "Cole, this is Leah. She's new to Nashville. Leah, this is Cole." Marissa introduced us to one another.
He flashed a warm smile. "Nice to meet you." He said as he shook my hand. I smiled back. "Nice to meet you." I replied. "Come on you two. I've been waiting to have the cake when Cole was here." Marissa said before walking into the kitchen. Cole chuckled.
"She's something isn't she?" He asked as we followed behind her. "I've been here for like four days and I can tell she's something else." I joked.
"Where are you from?" Cole asked as everyone started to sing happy birthday. Cole and I were standing in the back, so we could hear each other.
"I'm from North Carolina. Being in Nashville is a whole lot different from small North Carolina." I said. Cole nodded. "I played in North Carolina before. I have to agree with you on that." He said, making me laugh. "Cole! Leah! If you want a cake, come get some." Marissa said as she cut the cake. Cole and I went up and grabbed our piece. "Thanks for coming, Uncle Cole." Allie looked up at him. She had icing all over her face. Cole smiled down at her. "You know I wouldn't miss your birthday." He told her.
Allie wrapped her arms around him, giving him a hug before running off with her friends.
"Do you have kids of your own? You are a natural with her." I asked. Cole shook his head. "I want to have a family in the future. I guess kids just love me." Cole laughed.
Cole and I were probably the last ones at the house. I was helping Marissa clean up while Cole and Allie played in the living room.
As I was throwing the paper cups away, we heard Marissa. "Daddy!" Marissa perked up and ran towards the living room. I followed. There was a guy standing at the door in a military uniform. Allie was in his arms, her arms wrapped around his neck. Her dad was in the military. Makes sense why he wasn't here. "Jacob." Marissa was speechless. "I'm home." He grinned at her, walking over and pulling her into a hug. It was a special moment for sure. Cole and I looked at each other. Like we read each other's mind, we both decided to leave.
"It was nice to meet you, Leah." Cole said as we headed towards our cars. "It was nice to meet you. Marissa had mentioned you before when she showed me around." I said as I unlocked my car. Cole smiled as he stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"Maybe I could show you more sometime. I'm going to be in town again next week." He offered. I needed to make new friends as it was. "Sure." I smiled as I wrote my number down. "Here's my number. I have to get going now, I'm on the search for a job." I said.
"See ya."-----
Marissa's sister, Carley had managed to get me an interview for the labor and delivery floor at the hospital. The interview was tomorrow at seven. I was a little nervous but confident. It was my first night at home cooking dinner. For the past few days, I had been eating out, so I could get used to the area.
As I put the plate on the table, my phone started ringing.
I was receiving a Facetime call from my sister. I hardly talked to her since I moved so I wondered what she wanted. I hit accept and a few seconds later my niece's face appeared on the screen. My sister has two children. My niece being the oldest, four. My nephew was almost one. My sister and I hardly got along but I got along with her only for my niece and nephew.
"Hi auntie! I miss you!" She exclaimed. "I miss you too, Emmy." Her name was Emma, but I called her Emmy. I could hear Cameron in the background making noise. Cameron was my nephew.
"Are you with your mom?" I asked her. She shook her head.
"Daddy's been caring for us. Mommy's gone." Emmy answered. I was concerned. "Put your dad on the phone, please." I told her. She carried the phone over to Ryan, her father.
His face appeared on the screen.
"Hey, Leah! How is life in Nashville?" He questioned, setting the phone up on the counter as he cooked dinner for the kiddos. "It's very different from North Carolina but I'm managing." I answered. Now to get to the real deal. "What did Emma mean when she said her mom's gone?" I questioned.
Ryan sighed, not really wanting to talk about it. "Since you moved away, Ashley has hit rock bottom. She's back on her addiction." Ryan explained. My eyes widen. Ashley was clean for almost six months. She was addicted to pain pills. Now, she's back to her old habit.
"I told her, if she was going to do that shit again, she can leave. She isn't doing it with the kids." Ryan added. I nodded. We got her help the first time.
"If I have to move back, I will. I can get her help." I suggested. Ryan shook his head. "If she wanted to stay clean, she would have. I'm done with her, Leah. She stole money from me that was for the kids. Everything she could possibly do, she did." Ryan said. I was furious at my sister right now.
"So, she left everything even her phone I am assuming." I said. Ryan nodded. I just shook my head. After talking for a couple of minutes, we hung up. I had to get ready for bed to prepare for the interview tomorrow.Chapter 3 is posted! Leah and Cole met each other! What did you think of their little introduction?
