-Ashton-A gasp ripped out of me as I was being shaken, my eyes were wide as I stared, mouth open, at Calum. The teen was fully dressed and had his arms crossed when he saw that I was finally awake.
"What the hell was that?!" I snapped angrily at how he just woke me up, standing up quickly causing me to instantly feel dizzy. I fell back onto the bed and glared at the kiwi teen who chuckled at my response to him.
I looked up at the ceiling, and then at then at the warm flannel blanket that covered my lower half.
I was home?
"Yes- I came here at night. Your mom let us in, told me that David was busy with something at work," Calum broke the thick tension filled silence to answer a question I hadn't even asked yet. I nodded. Of course he was at work, we did kinda cause a scene didn't we? I'm sure the whole building was swarmed with people who would kill to get their hands on me. That didn't mean well for Calum and I. I didn't purposefully drag him into this, but if I had knew what would unfold from all this I would've been more careful involving my best friend.
I sat up slowly, placing my head in my hands and letting out a frustrated sigh.
"I woke you up abruptly for a reason, your mom left the house to go somewhere...All I know is she was on the phone before she left speaking with who the hell knows...Obviously there are people trying to find us, and I think we shouldn't trust anyone but each other. That being said, she may have turned against us and given our location to someone. I'd rather we not stick around to find out," Calum explained, his eyes moving to look at the two black duffel bags he had packed with clothing and other necessities at the side of my bed.
With a nod, I stood up, now coming to terms with what was going on. I felt like I was part of some post-apocalypse show. But, the rest of the world around us had no idea what was going on. Opening my door and going downstairs, I stood in front of the basement door, just staring at the knob, it was begging me to turn it.
"You shouldn't, it could be a trap.." Calum muttered, and that's what I had been concerned about. What if it was a trap, Luke might not even be down there anymore.
I turned the knob anyway, looking down into the blackness. Originally there had been a dim lights to show that there were stairs, and concrete ground. But now it was just pitch black everywhere. I pulled my phone out of my pocket which was on airplane mode to not get tracked, and turned on a flashlight. Carefully moving down the stairs, hating the creaking noise. Calum followed behind me, more worried about the whole trap possibility of this. I didn't hear any movements in response to my own as I walked further down into the basement.
The sounds of my socks reaching the concrete floor was nonexistent, and the cotton material of the socks did nothing to warm my feet from how cold the ground was. I panned my phone back and forth to try and illuminate the parts of the room I could not see. And against the far wall in front of me was Luke. His eyes shut, wires protruding out of different sections of his body. The wires seem to glow a faint blue, similar to the blues of his eyes. And my heart seemed to be beating a million times a second, but did I actually have a heart? A heart beating faster and faster when your nervous lets you know you're alive, that you can feel. So it could easily just be that my father programmed me to think I had a heart, so that I would believe that I was alive in the first place.
I inched closer to the inactive cyborg, my hands shaking as I brought them up to touch his face. Luke's eyes slowly opening and blinking a few times before the gears in his eyes slowly began to move. He titled his head, looking at me with a confused expression.
"Who are you?" He asked, leaning forward and shaking his stiff limbs. Calum's mouth fell open in shock as he saw Luke, and I just stared at him speechless. I knew he had forgotten everything, but I suppose I hadn't come to fully accept it. And even as he asked who I was, a part of me just wanted to scream:
You already know! It's Ashton, stop playing around this joke isn't funny!
Calum gently grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the robot who opened his lips to ask yet another question. He stepped in front of me, probably because he had recognized that I just couldn't handle this yet.
"That's Ashton, I'm Calum. Luke we need you to come with us, I know this may seem sudden but you need to trust us," Calum began to explain, and Luke's face contorted in confusion. I bit my lip just staring at him, how long had it been since we had spoken with one another? Too long.
"Why should I trust you? I don't know who you are, you could just be lying about your identities," Luke replied with crossed arms. Calum put his head in his hands before letting out a sigh of irritation.
"Please Luke, I really need you to just trust us. We will not harm you nor put you in danger. We need to leave with us though. You are literally the most important part of the plan besides Ashton. If you don't do this, you will seriously regret it- I don't mean that as a threat. It's just, you lost your memories and we want to help you get them back, as well as keep you safe from David," Calum stated, hoping that Luke wouldn't give them any further difficulty. But the cyborg just seemed to be thinking over what Calum had just told him. He bit his lip before nodding in agreement, and Calum side hugged him as a thank you, in which he just gave him another awkward nod.
I stayed silent, for how could I contribute to this? I couldn't. Luke had no idea who I really was or any of the love we shared for each other.
Calum's body turned suddenly as we heard a door open upstairs. Could it just be my mom? Honestly, even If it was, we couldn't trust her anyway. The basement had no emergency exits within it, so we listened to the footsteps moving around upstairs, with our anxiety increasing by the second.
"Luke, is there anyway out of here?" Calum asked suddenly, and I was about to tell Calum that there wasn't but Luke interrupted and stated that there was. Pointing to the back wall before walking to it and pressing his hand against the cool brick. I gave him a weird expression when he began pushing on one of the bricks. But to my surprise, the brick slowly began to become unlodged and fall, a combination lock behind it. Luke seemed to think for a few seconds before turning the lock a few times and unlocking it. The bricks moving to the left and exposing an unlocked metal door which opened for us now that Luke had unlocked it. He let Calum and I leave before he did, closing the door on his way out. We crouched down while exiting, for Calum felt we couldn't be too careful.
We made our way to Calum's car and we quickly got in, noticing my mom's car in the driveway. So maybe it had just been her, but she could've also brought a few people along with her. Bad people? Who knew? In Calum's head, everyone was bad now. I wondered if Joy was concerned about him, and I wondered if he missed her. He seemed to be calm and put together, but honestly I sure as hell knew I wasn't. So maybe he was just better at hiding his slowly breaking sanity.
Luke was sitting in the backseat, and when I looked in the side view mirror I could see that his expression was very conflicted. I felt guilty, he had no idea what was going on. But this was all David's fault. Calum pulled out the driveway and began driving, and the world seemed calm, peaceful. But internally everything was falling apart.
"Where are we going?" I asked Calum, who continued looking at the road whilst he answered.
"Back to your father's lab," He answered, his knuckles turning white as his grip tightened on the steering wheel. Neither of us noticing anything strange going on, but that's what seemed to be strange. That everything was normal, too normal. But maybe that was just the stress getting to us.
