April 12, 1861
The word of the American Civil War spread quickly across the nation. Everyone knew that their days may be limited. They hoped that they might be the lucky ones who were able to opt out. But of course, as get would have it, not many got their wish.
Castiel Novak would be one of the unlucky. In just 12 short months, he would be seperated from his wife and two small children. It was unfair; had they no heart? That's just how it would have to go, though.
"April, I'm sorry. What am I to do? There is no way out of this." Castiel expressed to his beautiful wife.
"All of the other women are so proud when their husbands are drafted, but I don't want you hurt. You could hide, I'm sure!" April tried to convince Castiel.
Castiel just shook his head and engulfed her in his arms. He would come back to her, their love would be stronger than ever. His children would be just as beautiful as the day he left. He had this perfect picture stuck in his head of how it would all be. He'd heard stories that war could really mess a person up but he didn't think that would be him. He would leave for a while and come back to live happily ever after.
If only someone could've told him. None of the things he'd hoped were going to come true. Everything would change. Nothing can ever just stay the same forever. He wasn't going to come home, at least not as the same Castiel.

Just a few days edited Castiel would be leaving for the war. He tried desperately to savor the time he had left with his family because he wasn't sure what would happen. And everything he did that he enjoyed hurt him even more because he wouldn't et that anymore. It was all harsh and he would be gone until the war ended or he died.
Time passed by in the blink of an eye and the next thing he knew, he was in Corinth at the battle of Shiloh. He pictured himself going home to his wife and kids, everyone smiling. It was only a little bit of time until he saw them again and life would be back to normal. He was on the Confederate side.
He tried to take everything in, how beautiful everything was. But seeing cannons rolling in shook him with fear. But he refused to believe that something would happen to him. Those kinds of things happen to other people, not people like him.
A man led Castiel to a tent, "This is going to be your home for a while, boy. But don't get comfy, we're leaving in a little."
No one went easy on him. Even if he was just 23, easy didn't exist. Easy ceased to exist when he stepped foot on the battle field.
Castiel walked into the tent where 5 other men stood around. He walked over to a vacant bed that creaked as he sat down. He'd always dreamed that he would be an artist someday, he had drawn a picture of his family. that parchment would lay with him every night until he went home.
Before he got a chance to do anything else, the men started filing out. The battle was beginning.
It was Castiel's first time fighting and he was scared, all he had was a gun. They were marching down to an open green field that was simply gorgeous. Everyone was lined upon rows wth a small strip strip of land between the opposite army. Castiel heard yells come out and people began shooting. Soon enough, the once glorious green field was soaked in blood. He had to shoot unless he wanted to be in trouble; he pulled the trigger and watched as a young boy dropped to his knees. The boy was silent and bled badly, but no one seemeto care. Everyone was busy fighting for their lives and the boy just dropped cold. He'd just killed an innocent boy with a life infront of him. He watched him drop.
Thankfully it ended. it was hours of standing and Castiel had already watched so many people drop. It wasn't fazing him anymore, it was kill or be killed. He'd watched his own men drop but if he didn't want to be like them, he couldn't help them.
