The year is 1878 and Victoria is Queen of England. Sixteen-year-old Theresa Gray is in London, working at a cotton factory to support herself and her Aunt Harriet. One day, her Aunt dies of what Tessa believes is a fever and Tessa's elder brother Nate, who works for the lucrative Mortmain Industries, sends her a sudden letter inviting her to come live with him. He sends a carriage to escort her to his home. Along with the carriage, Tessa is met by two sisters named Mrs. Black and Mrs. Dark who act coldly toward her and insist she gets in the carriage. She never arrives at her brother's house.
