Somewhere in the woods of the Kouka kingdom, near Hiryuu's Castle, two shadows made their way silently towards a rabbit hole. None of the fallen leaves crisped under their feet, so that the small animal would not hear them. Confident, one of the two smiled with satisfacti-
Crac!
Inside its hole, a rabbit suddenly went still, sniffing the air and perking its ears. It then heard the faint sound of two beings breathing outside. Frightened, it ran at the far end of its hole, making sure to not be the dinner of its predators.
"Crap! Why must there be so many leaves in a forest?" Said a seventeen years old boy whilst stomping his feet on the ground. "Dinner just escaped! And I thought we would be back before sunset!" Clenching his fist and pointing it to the sky, he then stopped mid air when his eyes caught the evil glare coming from is companion.
Said companion was a girl, shorter than him. She had long blond hair, that she had braided so it didn't get in her eyes during the hunt, green eyes and freckles on her cheekbones and nose. She would have been qualified as cute if it weren't for the really dark aura emanating from her body. If eyes could kill..
The boy gulped soundly, feeling his blood retreat from his face.
"I...huh...I am really sorry Jack. I didn't mean to ruin our day...our very long and exhausting day of hunt." He quickly corrected himself, seeing the girl's face darkening at his words.
Heavy silence followed, only interrupted by a long sigh, released by the said Jack.
"Whatever. I guess it can't be helped now. Let's just hope that the traps I set yesterday are full, otherwise the kids won't have anything to eat for another day."
She then began to head deeper in the woods, followed by her friend. Whom was arboring a very relieved expression on his face.
As they both reached their destination, they found a little rabbit caught up in the trap. With a swift movement the boy killed the animal and proceeded to release it and put it in his bag. With a nod from the girl, they headed back to their home.
Two shadows walking silently in the woods as the night settled on the kingdom.
As they reach the end of the forest, the could see the lights coming from the castle. So many lights.. It was the princess' birthday after all, they might have set a great feast for the lady. Looking at his partner, the boy said:
"There is something strange happening at the Castle, I can sense it."
"Oh sure, because you are a medium now? Stop babblering and get back to work Liam, we need to bring dinner tonight." Said the shorter of the two shadows while rolling her eyes and pulling the sleeve of her friend behind her, forcing him to follow.
Their home was an ancient church. A ancient and half destroyed church. It was a wonder, that thing has not totally collapsed yet. As the two hunters arrived, they were welcomed by a concert of childish yell, kids running towards them.
Homeless kids.
Orphans.
Children forgotten by the villagers.
Forgotten by the kingdom.
They were living under Jack's protection. A girl who was left alone on her own after witnessing the death of both her parents. She made a friend out of Liam, meeting him for the first time as they wanted to steal the same apple from the same merchant.
Jack was previously named Aliandara but decided to change it as it sounded too girly. She was living in the streets alone (or almost). She could not be known as female. In order to avoid unecessary problems due to her gender, she simply tought it would be best to be a boy for other's eyes. That's how she became Jack at the age of eight.
Ten years later, she had learned how to handle herself just well and could have take back her original name. The problem was that she got a liking for 'Jack'. It made her feel stronger. And she very much liked the idea of being strong. So, Jack it was.
Over the years, Jack and Liam helped lost children and orphans. Providing them food and shelter. Trying to cheer them up when they were sad and felt abandonned by the rest of the world, by playing games. They were curently trying to clean their 'living place', and so in order for it to be more entertaining, they were playing pirates scrubbing the deck.
"Captain Jack! Captain Jack!" Yelled a six years old girl. "Me and the others don't want to scrub the deck anymore! We want to eat!"
The 'captain' furrowed her eyebrows looking at her. The others kids behind tried to appear very little and avoided their gaze.
"What did I hear? You don't want to scrub?"
Looking very serious, yet her voice shivering, the child answer her elder's question.
"We just want to eat, we are hungry and Liam's cooking is begginning to smell like burnt trees.. If we wait it's going to be too late."
Chuckling, Jack allowed the children to stop the cleaning, saying she would do it by herself.
The kids cheered and ran to find Liam and litteraly attacked him, ordering him to stop his burning mess.
A few hours later, everyone was sound asleep except for Jack who was keeping watch outside to prevent the defensless group from being attacked by strangers. Staring at the sky, she could not help but feel a shiver ran down her spine.
Liam's right. Something feels odd tonight. I wonder what's happening.
