"King Il is dead!"
That sentence was on every citizen's lips. In every mind. The rumor spreaded out like a trail of powder.
That's how Jack, who was busy helping one of her protégé to hide from officials (he stole a piece of fabric under their nose), learned the big new of the day.
So, there really was something going on huh?
Jack quickly set an escape plan for the child. She would make a racket in the center of the public place, letting enough time for her friend to go back at the church. Then she was planning on.... she would find something on the spot.
Breathing deeply she got in action. Yelling incoherent words and throwing rocks at the passengers she succeeded at getting the guards attention. Thinking of nothing really useful to help her as they were running at her, she ran as fast as she could in the alleways that she knew by heart.
Right, left, left, straight.
Hard turn on the right.
Climb the roof of the bakery.
Jump on the other roofs.
As she lost her pursuers in the depth of the town she began to wonder.
Are all the cities of Kouka the same as this one? Would I be able to find some kind of job if I were to live somewhere else?
Shaking her head hard and scolding herself for thinking such things, Jack came back at the church were all the children were waiting for her.
Seeing them and Liam there made her smile softly.
She could never abandon her family.
They were her world.
Late that night, Liam found his friend under an old tree deep in thoughts. As he approached her, she lifted her head and smiled at him, warming his heart. Jack was a sister figure to him ; so strong yet so delicate. He felt the need to help her, to always be there for her. However when the said sister was pissed, it was better to not be the object of that anger. The short cheerful girl transforming into a wild beast wasn't particularly a nice experience to live.
Liam shuddered in fear, remembering old times. That's when Jack's voice came out almost a whisper as if she didn't want to break the serenity they shared.
"I heard that King Il has been murdered."
Shocked, Liam looked at her with wide eyes. "What? How? When? By whom?"
Chuckling humoroulessly at her friend reaction she answered:
"Well, I heard rumors saying his daughter's bodyguard - I think his name is Hal something - is the culprit. He disapeared with princess Yona after that. It was last night, after the princess' party."
Silence followed.
"Hak."
"Huh?" Jack stared dumbfounded at Liam who just blurted out that word.
The boy said with a very serious tone: "The name of the man. It's Hak. He is the Wind tribe's general. Or was? I don't think the new king would want him anymore. Besides...who is the new king?"
"The officials spoke about a Soo won guy. Never heard about him."
"Where do you live? Under a rock? Soo won is Princess Yona's older cousin!"
"Well, if you look at the church..from here it does look like a big rock..so I guess yeah? I do live under a rock." Jack answered sheepishly.
That said, Liam gave a small punch on top of Jack's head. She could be so dense about things sometimes, it was astonishing.
Shrugging, Jack stood up and headed back to the church.
"Well, I just hope this king will be different, there are too many children left by themselves in the world, they need their parents to be alive and not dead because of poverty. Oh I forgot, you are on duty tonight Liam, I'm going to sleep."
With these words, the girl went to sleep, leaving her friend up to keep watch.
