The footsteps kept getting closer. No matter how she ran, she couldn't escape them. Her breath came in short painful gasps and there was a stitch growing in her side. She tried to catch her breath quietly so she wouldn't give her position away.
"Where are you?" a voice calls sweetly.
"Come out and play." another voice calls.
She looks around the alley she's hiding in and all around her all she can see are twists and turns as the alley wraps around the houses set in various places. A rats warren of streets and alleys connect these houses together and she didn't know the neighborhood. She had already circled back twice and couldn't find the way out.
"You've been a naughty girl," a voice calls out, closer than the others.
"FOUND YOU!" A face appears.
She screams and starts running again. Rocks fly past her and one hits her on the back of her shoulder. Pain erupts as laughter follows.
"You got her, throw another one" A voice squeals in glee.
"You need to be punished. You have no right to run away." A voice calls out behind her.
No matter how much she runs she can't escape them. She runs down one alley after another and yet the voices and footsteps never falter behind her.
"You can't have them. They belong to us," another voice snarls.
"You're not even Korean. How dare you like them." A voice says angrily.
Her breath comes painfully and she feels the stitch in her side becoming larger. The voices continue to taunt her as rocks, sticks and the occasional brick fly past her. As she runs around another corner, she comes face to face with her attackers. The fury on their faces is all she can see as they grab her. They painfully pull at her hair and her clothes. She hears her clothes rip and tear and realize they are using knives to cut her clothing away. Soon all she has on is her underwear. Her scars glow red. As she looks down, it seems like they have spread all over her body.
"Someone as ugly as you has no business liking them. They belong to us. We will never let you have them." They yell.
A face comes close to her and snarls, "Just who do you think you are?"
A knife touches the scar on her neck and she feels the point cut into her skin.
She starts to scream.
Shay jolted awake. A scream died on her lips as she realized nobody was holding her. Sitting up, she looked around the unfamiliar bedroom, breathing quickly, the remnants of the dream still holding her. As her heartbeat slowed down she realized where she was. Closing her eyes, she took a few deep breaths and tried to slow her heartbeat down. Shay put her head into her hands and shivered. It felt so real. She hadn't had a nightmare that vivid since her recovery days when she was still on heavy pain meds and the anesthesia hadn't fully worked itself out of her system.
Shay got out of bed and walked to the window. It was still dark outside but the dream was too vivid to stay in bed. Grabbing her robe and slippers, Shay left her bedroom and walked out the backdoor into the moonlit backyard. Sitting on a bench, Shay looked out over the fence to the city lights below. She could see street lights sparkling like stars, city buildings that still had lights on at this ungodly hour of the night. Looking up, the stars were muted against the city lights. This was much like back home. You had to get out of the city to really see stars. The moon was shining brightly and Shay contemplated her dream as she looked at the play of shadows across its surface.
