Chapter 2

The day went by in a blur.

All the two men in black suits did was observe us do our chores. Once in a while, Mr. Curtain would call someone over and ask him or her a few questions.

The dinner bell rang just as I finished doing the dishes. I held the plates at a certain angle the whole time I was doing the dishes, giving me a clear view of the men this whole time. I saw them as they quietly snuck outside the house.

I frowned. Everyone got called over except for Isa and I. It might mean nothing, but my gut tells me otherwise. My stomach growled and I silently laughed to myself. Sometimes, I just overthink things.

“Kate, can I talk to you for a moment?” Jane asked, motioning for me follow her.

“Okay.” She led me to her office, and we sat down on opposite sides of the table. Isa was in there waiting for us. “I don’t want to go to the boarding school, and neither will Isabel.”

“How did you know that? Wait, no, don’t answer tha–”

“Well, first off, today’s date is printed on those two files over there in your filing cabinet, meaning you got those just today. The logo on those two files is the same logo pinned on Mr. Curtain and Mr. Thompson’s suits.

“I noticed yesterday that Isabel and I were the only ones not called over by the men. I thought it didn’t mean anything at first, that they might have overlooked us both. When I saw Isabel here and those two files, I figured that they didn’t overlook us and instead chose us both to go to the boarding school.

“Why did they choose us? Out of the five hundred, eighty three children in this orphanage, why us? Why not Sophie? Or Alex?

“By the way, have you been cooking again Isa? You smell like smoke and I think I heard the fire alarm go off earlier,” I rambled.

Jane let out a frustrated sigh. “This is why they chose you, Kate. You are exceptionally smart and have the rare gift of noticing tiny details.”

“Why did they choose me?” Isa asked. “Is it because I’m good at setting things on fire?”

“Because they see potential in you,” Jane stated. “Don’t bother refusing, because they won’t be taking no as an answer.”

“No, and that is my final answer.” I stomped my foot on the floor for effect. I’m not going down without a fight.

“I don’t mind going. I want to experience going to school and having a normal life, not stuck in here like you, Kate.”

“Isa, please. You are all I have left. I don’t want to lose you. If you go, I might not see you again.”

“Well, whatever. I’m going to the boarding school, no matter what you say.”

“Isa, please don’t leave me.”

“You can always join the boarding school, you know.” With that, she turned and slammed the door.

“She’s still ten years old. Don’t be so harsh on her,” Jane said, breaking the silence.

I sighed. The tension was thick in this room.

“You have to join the boarding school,” Jane said in an attempt to start a conversation.

“I said no, and it will always be no.” This time, it was my turn to slam the door and leave.

Oh for the love of doors.
