Chapter 1

I woke up today feeling that something wasn't right.

The usual silence on a Saturday morning at the orphanage was replaced with an unbearable commotion. Looking around the girls' sleeping quarters, I saw that I was the last one to get out of bed.

That never happens.

Wiping the sleep off my face, I made my way downstairs to get some breakfast, only to see that everyone was rushing in order to get ready.

Again, that never happens.

I scanned the room, looking for my sister. The smell of smoke and a loud shriek told me that she was in the kitchen, trying to cook.

"Isa," I called out, "is everything okay?"

"I don't know. Is the water supposed to be on fire?" she replied.

I hurried over and grabbed a glass lid for the pot on the way. I slammed the lid on the pot, using a damp towel to protect my hand.

"Isa, what did I tell you about cooking?" I scolded her.

She bowed her head in shame. "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't cook without adult supervision, but I wanted to impress our guardians. Maybe they will recommend me to the men in black suits."

"What men? And why is everyone running around like monkeys trying to do the tango?"

"You didn't hear? Some men are coming over to select two lucky children to attend a special boarding school. They say that the school is awesome."

Oh. So today is the day. I hope both of us won't get selected, because if we do, we won't be allowed to see each other ever again. At least, that was what our guardians told us. Although it seems unlikely, I'm not taking any chances.

"Kate?"

"Huh? Yeah?"

"I hope I get selected."

Before I could say anything, the doorbell rang. Everyone stopped they were doing and set their gazes on the front door. We rushed into two lines as Jane, one of our guardians, opened it.

Two men walked into the room. They both have fresh mud all over their shoes – they must have walked all the way up this hill.

The first man that walked in was in his late fifties. He had thinning grey hair, and his nose resembled a pink cucumber. He kept glancing his watch every now and then. No matter where he stood, his body would always be tilted towards the exit. He ignored his colleague and shoved past the guardians.

He hates this job, I realized. He was wearing an expensive suit with a logo pinned on his left, a Rolex watch, and was carrying a Hermès briefcase. He must have kept the job for so long because it pays well.

The man behind him was in his mid twenties. He was jittery and kept shifting his gaze over to the first man. He didn't wear any accessories apart from the company logo pinned on his wrinkled suit. His hair was combed neatly to one side and has bags underneath his eyes. He would constantly fiddle with a wedding ring on his right hand.

He's the newbie. No money for accessories or dry-cleaning yet, apparently. Definitely no money for a maid, so his wife must be busy with something to forget to iron them. A baby, perhaps? That would explain the bags under his eyes, I mused.

I wrinkled my nose as I caught a whiff of baby poop when he passed by. Yep, definitely a newborn baby.

"Children, this is Mr. Curtain," Jane said, pointing at the first man, "and this–" she pointed at the second man, "–is Mr. Thompson."

"Hello, kids," Mr. Thompson spoke, "I believe you know why we are here."

"Today, we will select two of you to join two different boarding schools on opposite ends of the country," Mr. Curtain growled. "Today, two of your lives will be changed forever."
