~Prologue~

India/Bharat/Saptsindhu
2000 B.C.

The morning came with a surprise of rain and thunder, so unexpected in nature that it only meant one thing. Lord Indra's wrath. What Else it could be?  The great old sage Vishwamitra had the grave realization of the risks his tribe was surrounded with. The weight of Dharma, as suggested by the greater gods, was hardest to bear, but it was the only way. He told himself nervously for the hundredth time.

He patiently waited, chanting the holy mantras, with the other 29 sages, and expected the gods to arrive. The tension on his head was clear but he maintained his calm. He was the senior sage and had the responsibility to lead other sages whenever required.

His concerns vanished the moment they appeared. All the negativity his heart had felt was gone, and he with other sages fell on the knees and bowed before the Devtas (Suras). Leading them, was Lord Agni, the god of fire and flames, and on his right was Lord Varuna, smiling like a newly married bride. Standing firmly behind them was Lord Vayu, the god of winds and storms, who was looking at the sages with admiration and respect.

"I bow to your lotus feet, O Agni, my lord, and I bow with respect to Lord Vayu and Lord Varuna. Accept my prayers and bless us all. We all bow to your holiness and seek your wisdom, Prabhu!"

"Please, don't curse us, Sage Vishwamitra by praising us so highly, we are not Lord Indra who would steal your cows for dishonor," Lord Varuna said with gentle laughter.

"Lord Varuna speaks the truth!" Lord Agni shook turned towards the great sage and said, "You are the pillars of Dharma and we all regard you highly, and we consider you our equals, Rishi-Shrestha!"

"A Fact that Lord Indra will never accept," One of the Vishwamitra's students expressed, "I will apologize for my comment, but tell me Oh great lords of Heaven, what does the king of Devtas want? Why didn't he appear for today's meeting or wait, is he hiding in the dark, waiting for us to beat drumbeats for his welcome?"

"Shut up, Satyarth, you are mocking gods!" Another student intervened. Lord Agni didn't take the comment as an insult but rather smiled at Satyarth and asked everyone to take their seats.

Sage Vishwamitra couldn't help but look at the poor conditions of his Ashram. It was small and poorly fortified. The fear of Asura's unexpected attack disturbed his mind so much that he started skipping evening prayers. He had doubts about inviting gods of the Swarg in these critical times as it wasn't a small risk.
