Next rehearsal, two days later
"I float in a boat
In a raging black ocean
Low in the water
With nowhere to go."This is the only part of the musical Logan has any connection to. It's the only part that makes him feel. But he hasn't decided whether that's something to celebrate or something to fear.
"The tiniest lifeboat
With people I know."Cold shivers tickle down his spine and he clears his throat, using every brain cell in his possession to keep it together. To distract himself, he barks a series of orders to the backstage and lighting crews, even though everything is practically perfect. He feels a smile when he sees Virgil's silhouette in the lights, flipping him off.
"Cold, clammy, and crowded
The people smell desperate
We'll sink any minute
So someone must go.
The tiniest lifeboat
With the people I know."Heather McNamara burns like a fallen angel in the lights.
"Everyone's pushing
Everyone's fighting
Storms are approaching
There's nowhere to hide.
If I say the wrong thing
Or I wear the wrong outfit
They'll throw me right over the side."Logan goes over the multiplication tables in his head, trying desperately not to think of the way the words make him feel. It's not logical. It doesn't make sense.
"I'm hugging my knees
And the captain is pointing
Well who made her captain?
Still, the weakest must go."Gesturing to the nearest stagehand to take over the mic, Logan flees the theatre via one of the many backstage passages, trying to outrun both his tears and the haunting lyrics. He achieves neither.
"The tiniest lifeboat
Full of people I know.
The tiniest lifeboat
Full of people I know."Later, Virgil finds him in the men's bathroom, struggling to compose himself.
