Song; This Is Gospel by Panic! At The Disco
Max is pacing in the men's bathroom, from one corner to another over and over and it is really bothering Steve.
"Can you please stop doing that. It's kinda hard to pee while listening to your footsteps going 'click', 'click', 'click'." Steve complains while looking at Max from the corner of his eye.
Rolling his eyes, Max says, "I'm not even looking. And even if I was, it's not like it'll be the first time that happens. Remember 7th grade?"
Steve quickly finishes his business, zips up his pants and washes his hands. Catching Max's stupid grin in the mirror, he laughs. "Wasn't the best memory but yes, I remember. I still have nightmares from that, you know?" Steve gives Max a pointed look and Max raises his eyebrows knowingly. "But we did scare the hell out of those stupid girls, so that was good."
"We were also sent to the principal's office and got one hell of a lecture about indecent exposure."
Max shakes his head at the memory from almost 20 years ago. He and Steve were tired of the few girls who thought it would be funny to steal the boys' clothes from the gym locker while they were in the shower. So, as a stupid revenge and a way of scaring the girls away, they sneaked out of gym class before the girls got to the gym locker and hid behind the door, naked. As soon as they heard the girls' voices they jumped out at them, screaming and beating their chests. The girls ran off as fast as lighting, covering their eyes in a failed attempt to block away the traumatising image.
Steve wipes his hands with a tissue. "I got a good beating from my dad after that. And 'the talk', too. Man, that was awkward."
"At least it was your dad. I got one from my granny."
Steve throws his head back laughing, trying to imagine the level of embarrassment his friend must've felt at that time. Max is his friend since the beginning of school and it is really nice to have at least one friend that has known him for all these years, one that he can count on in a time of trouble. But it seems that today, Max is the one who needs his help.
Walking back to his car outside of the restaurant where they had their dinner just now, Steve finally asks what has been bugging his friend and Max's shoulders visibly sags at the question. "It's about Leah." Leah is Max's girlfriend of 4 years.
"Did you two fight again?" Steve asks, opening the car door before getting in.
Max gets into the passenger's seat and sighs. "Yeah. For the third time this week."
"Goodness. You gotta get your shits together, both of you. Aren't your parents expecting an engagement by the end of the month?"
"That's the thing, the engagement. I don't think I can go through with it." If Steve has been driving throughout the conversation, he may have swerved and killed them both. He's thankful he hasn't even started the car yet. "Things have been very exhausting lately and I don't think I can deal with the same restlessness for the rest of my life. Oh God, I can't spend the rest of my life with that crazy witch."
The nickname makes Steve raise an eyebrow at his friend. "But you've already bought the ring."
Max runs his fingers through his hair. "Yes, but I haven't proposed to her yet. Will it be too bad if I call it off now? The whole thing?"
"Pretty bad. Maybe it's just the stress that's getting at you. I think you should wait for a bit, see if you're still sure about marrying her. If yes, then good for the both of you. It not, then you know I got your back." Steve says, finally turning the engine on.
