I held Lux's hand and shut the door behind me. I looked around the corridor. It had a flight of stairs leading upstairs, facing the living room. A couch was backfacing us and the television was switched on.
A boy started running around with his friend chasing him behind. Lux pulled me towards the living room but I ended up stepping onto the shards of broken porcelain from the broken vase earlier on. A sting of pain made me wince. I let go of Lux and sat on the floor, inspecting my wound. She watched me with a blank look on her face before running into the living room.
I had a shard of porcelain stuck in my skin, blood oozing from the sides. I felt dizzy for a while but I told myself that it was okay. I attempted to pull it out.
"Taylor!" Harry called, with a broom and dustpan in his hands. I looked up at him as he ran towards me.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his eyes looking deep into mine. I ran my hand over the sole of my foot as a reply. I His eyes left mine and started examining the wound. He bit his lip.
"I'm gonna... Um..." He glanced at me, then at the shard. He was anxious to do what he was going to do.
"Pull it out. I'm okay with it." I gave him a weak smile even though my head was spinning quite badly.
I clenched my teeth as he pulled out the shard carefully. I noticed that the kids were watching us quietly. Once it came out, it felt better but it became really bright all around, voices muffled and unclear. Then, everything turned black.
-
I woke up. I felt someone's hand on mine. I turned to look at Harry. I smiled. He was dozing off on the chair placed next to the bed. I took in the surrounding and the boyish smell lingering in the room. Posters of bands were pasted on the wall before me. A window was across the room with his desk there.
I sat up. Harry jolted up, his face unsure of what just happened.
He stared at me, then gave me a tight hug. I was shocked at first because I thought he would ask if I was okay instead of hugging me. I wrapped my arms around him.
"You're okay..." He turned his head so he was talking into my ear, face in my hair.
"Yeah. How could I die from just a shard that was pierced through my foot?" I laughed.
"Well, I was panicking when you fainted."
We hugged each other for a while before I remembered that we were supposed to be babysitting. I pushed him back and asked, "The kids?"
"I told them to stay in the living room to play or watch some television after I carried you to my room and cleaned up the mess."
I turned to face Harry because I wanted to get off the bed. He helped me stand up. I tried to place my wounded sole down on the floor but it just stinged me. I pursed my lips tightly together.
"Careful now..." he told me softly as I hopped out the room on one foot with the help of a pair of Harry's feet.
I saw Lux running up the stairs with a paper in her hand. I smiled when she walked towards me.
"I'm sorry, Taylor. I drew this 'Get Well Soon' card for you." She handed me the paper. It was a picture of me on a bed with a sad face, my foot was in a cast like it was a major injury. The words 'Get Well Soon' were written, on the top of the drawing, in light pink.
"Turn the paper." She was giving me a bright smile.
I did, curious of why she was so excited. It was a drawing of me holding Lux's hand and Harry on the other side of her. I blushed.
"This is really nice, Lux," Harry complimented.
Lux gave him a proud smile befoee skipping down the stairs.
"Kids," we both say. We looked at each other and burst out laughing.
-
The children were such sweeties when they saw me. They asked me if I was feeling better and gave me well wishes. We played games that does not involve much physical activity. I started to love these children.
Before we knew it, it was time for them to go home with their parents. I gave all of them a hug before they go because I couldn't see them off at the door without Harry's help. He had to watch them reach their parents safely and say goodbye to them at the door.
After he was done, it was only me and him left in the apartment. He counted the amount of money he earned and stashed it in a jar that had the words "Savings" written on it. It was half full.
"Do you and Cas put all your savings inside?"
"Yeah. Mostly me because I babysit like everyday while Casper only works on the weekend at a fast food restaurant." He sat next to me on the couch. CSI was playing on the television.
I nodded slowly, concentrating more on the show.
"So you like these kind of shows?"
"Yeah. It keeps people in suspense which gives me such an adrenaline rush to know what is going to happen next."
He laughed. "You're so cute when you're excited."
My cheeks turned bright pink as I looked at him. He smiled at me. We leant in closer to each other. I knew what was going to happen, and I liked what was going to happen. Our lips brushed against each other's.
His phone started beeping. We both jolted backwards. He apologised and got up to get his phone at the kitchen counter. It stopped ringing once he got to it. He raised an eyebrow when he saw the screen.
"Who was it?" I asked, with a tinge of concern in my voice.
"My mum. She left me some messages but I didn..." His eyes widened. "I have to go." He glanced at me. "Now."
"Wha... Why?"
"My stepdad, he's..." He grabbed his keys and coat, giving me a look.
I knew what had happened.
And it was definitely not something good.
