Susan, Burt's on/off girlfriend had a furious look in her eyes. It was hard for Burt to look at her directly, not because she was absolutely outraged at his choice to leave, but because she was a spider, and had 8 of them - he never knew where to look.
"You can't just leave Burt!"
"I can and I will" Burt said bluntly whilst packing his little bag again.
"But" Susan said grasping at something to say, "... we've got dinner at the Henderson's next Thursday, you can't go."
Burt puffed and shook his head, "I've never liked going to the Henderson's, all they ever do is go on about how dark the world is."
"They're worms Burt, they live in darkness!"
"Besides the point...."
Burt threw the last bit of a crisp he found earlier that day into his bag and tied it to the end of his stick. He knew that he could live without Susan, but wasn't too sure if she could live without him. And, although Burt didn't really fancy taking her with him on his travels, he felt obligated too.
"Why not come with me?"
Susan scoffed at the idea.
Even though she was a spider and had 8 legs, she had always been a bit clingy, regardless... "I'm serious. You could come and see the beyond."
"There's nothing out there! Everyone know the world ends at the fence."
"Don't tell me you buy into the 'Flat Garden' theory?"
"It's a perfectly good theory!" Susan argued.
"Don't be silly... Next you'll be saying the garden's hollow, and the bird feeder landing was fake."
"You can see the wires, Burt!"
Burt, he was a good slug at heart, but realising he'd have to spend the rest of his journey arguing about the existence of crumb trails and water contamination, smiled happily as he left Susan behind.
He slimed down the other side of the fence, not knowing that his actions would ripple across the garden, and soon he would be part of history itself.
