Hiya! It's kitty, this is a short story I wrote for a competition, please tell me what you think!

Brooke stared around at the dusty attic.

"What can I find in here?" She muttered removing the dust on some boxes. Opening one, she noticed a tiny chessboard lying in the corner. She set it up, moved a white piece, shrugged and went downstairs.

Yet again, Brooke went up to the attic to find something interesting to do. Something caught her eye, a black piece had moved on the other side. She furrowed her eyebrows. Carefully, she pushed another white piece forward. This time she saw it... A black piece moving forward... Without anyone near it. She kept moving the pieces and was playing a chess game, with a ghost. The ghost seemed to be an expert at chess and she was struggling to defeat it. A few turns later, she found herself in checkmate. She sighed. She left the chessboard alone and went off to school.

"Brooke from class 6C please come to the office!" The headteacher said through the intercom. Brooke started wondering what she'd done wrong and scratched her brain. She pushed open the oak doors and was presented with the headteachers desk.

"Hello Miss, we would like to inform you that you are not in trouble," the teacher said.

"Thanks goodness, I was rather worried..." Brooke chuckled nervously.

"Well, we need you to do practice SATS all day today to see where you are in your learning." he handed her the tests and she went back to her classroom. She got a move on.

Once she got home there was a note on the table.

Unfortunately, your father has to go to New Zealand for work and will be gone for two years.

"Even more bad luck!" She groaned and sat on the sofa. Turning on the news, she got comfortable.

"Unfortunately, Parkers Primary School must be open for the summer holidays, students are required to come unless ill." The newsman reported.

"That's my school!" Brooke groaned. 'Wait a minute, I lost the chess match! It was against a ghost, or maybe the board was enchanted! I'm cursed!' she thought. The ladder was pulled down by Brooke and she zoomed up.

"I need to win!" yelled Brooke. She set it up again, just as she was going to move a white piece, it moved on its own.

"Ghost goes first." She muttered and moved a black pawn. The match went on for almost hours until Brooke finally won. Then the front door opened and closed. Cautiously, she stepped down, only to see it was her mother.

"Guess what sweetie!" Her mother said, her eyes glistening.

"What?" Brooke scratched her head.

"Your father is allowed home, and you don't have to go to school over the summer holidays!" She positively jumped for joy.

"I won." She whispered triumphantly.
