Chapter 8
I watched Whiteclaw stand there, giving out orders. Over the last moon, he had recovered fully. I looked up at the gray sky and at Leafkit and Featherkit playing around close to the nursery entrance.
Deadclaw and Flufffoot headed out to look for herbs as I sat next to the apprentices’ den. Amberpaw gathered some traveling herbs for her and Flufffoot for the half-moon meeting.
Tigertail walked over to me as I sat there, looking at the Clan. “Do you want to go hunt? We need to stock up.”
I nodded. “Of course.” I was all too eager to go with him.
We walked out of the hollow and followed a trail. I led, following the scents on the wind. We went our separate ways and I chased rabbits through the shadows and falling leaves. I gathered mice, rabbits, birds, all kinds of prey. It was one of the most plentiful hunts I had ever had. I could barely carry it all as I headed back to camp. I put it all on the dwindling fresh-kill pile, then grabbed four pieces of prey and put it in the elders’ den.
As I walked out, I saw Tigertail enter. As he put his fresh-kill on the pile, I walked over to him. “Tigertail, do you want to share a piece of prey?”
He looked at me and as he recognized me he glared at me. “I still haven’t forgiven you for not telling me.” He turned away and went into the warriors’ den.
I stared after him. My own mentor… I grabbed a thrush and went to the apprentices’ den. I would finish eating and then go collect some moss.
I woke up in the training hollow, but something was different. Leafpool was there without Squirrelflight. I walked up beside Leafpool from where she faced the forest.
“Leafpool, where’s Squirrelflight?” I asked her.
She looked at me. “She’s with the others, tonight we’re going to see the other medicine cats. Follow.” She looked back up and took off running into the forest.
I followed her through the trees and bushes. The leaves were even more sparse on the trees; it was almost fully leaf-bare. We came upon the Island as if we were just at the RiverClan camp, not the ThunderClan training hollow.
I saw Flufffoot and Amberpaw standing in the center. I heard Leafpool speak. “Amberpaw, earlier than any cat has known, is becoming a full medicine cat. She is being presented to StarClan.”
I looked to surprise to Leafpool, but then walked into the clearing. Flufffoot and Amberpaw couldn’t see me, but I could hear them talking to StarClan.
“I present Amberpaw to StarClan to become a full medicine cat, she has learned her role and the skills of a medicine cat. She will stand as a healer and let all the Clan become her kits. I ask you to accept her as a full medicine cat.” Flufffoot’s mew rang out in the hollow as cats with stars flitting in their fur entered the hollow around them and I.
“We accept Amberpaw as a full medicine cat.” Voices layered among others rang out. “Ambereye, we have seen your skills and loyalty. Help your Clan, not by fighting, but by healing.” All the cats dipped their heads as one and Ambereye was a full medicine cat alongside Flufffoot.
StarClan faded as Flufffoot and Ambereye faded as well.
I turned to Leafpool and she nodded as everything fell away and I woke to my nest. Ambereye. A perfect name for her. I closed my eyes as I listened to the wind howling through the hollow and the trees. I heard the wind change and I opened my eyes.
I looked outside to white. The first snow of leaf-bare was falling. I laughed and ran through the snow. I waved my tail and flicked my ears as the snow fell harder and harder. It was gathering on the ground thickly. I ran out of the brambled entrance, past Tigertail, and kept running.
