Chapter 10
I woke up on the Island. It was covered with mist and the Nine and Tigertail stood there in front of me. I stood up, looking at their sad faces.
I lowered my head and my tail. “I’m sorry.”
I felt Tigertail’s tail tip on my flank and I looked up into his amber eyes that mirrored Bramblestar’s. “It wasn’t your fault, you fought with all you had.”
I nodded. “Why did I have to lose a life now?”
Bluestar shook her head. “I don’t know, but I know that somehow this will help.”
“Somehow.” I said forlornly. “Somehow.” The Island faded. “I will return.” They all nodded as one as I returned back to the snowy forest. I looked out onto the snow under the leafless trees. The sky was painted red as sunset approached. I had lost a life, but it was for reason I will see someday.
I stood there in that meadow, after I hunted, for the rest of the night. I watched the border for any other cats, but none came. At dawn, a border patrol came toward me. I smelled it and I looked toward them. I saw Whiteclaw, Blackpaw, and Fleettail. I waited till they came close before I spoke, startling them.
“Hello.” I mewed.
Whiteclaw jumped, but then recovered. “Zenpaw, you scared me.”
I smiled. “Sorry. I’m going back to camp, is Tigertail buried?”
He looked confused. “Buried?”
“Tigertail died before I left the camp.”
“Tigertail’s alive.” He said.
I narrowed my eyes. “What colour are his eyes?”
Whiteclaw was taken aback. “Amber.” He said cautiously.
“Then he’s dead.” I sighed. “I’m going back to camp.” I walked past them with their confused expressions. I walked back to camp and when I exited the brambled tunnel, I was face to face with Tigertail. With brown eyes.
I hissed. “Jake.” I lashed my tail and crouched.
“I’m Tigertail, Zenpaw.” I stilled as he spoke further. “I’m sorry I scared you, I’m alive.” He walked to my side without even a hint of fear in his eyes. “I’m alive because of you.”
I sighed and began to laugh. “You think I can’t tell you from Tigertail? You’re more mouse-brained than I thought.” I laughed louder and the cats that were in the clearing raised their heads. “Tigertail in life feared me, he didn’t go close to me. You are horrible at hiding as Tigertail. Leave, Jake. Go back to a shadow. Let these cats be shown the truth!”
Jake backed up as darkness grew of Tigertail’s fur. Jake laughed as the shadow grew bigger and consumed Tigertail. The shadow disappeared and Tigertail, and Jake, were gone.
I looked to the camp and eyes of fear was all I saw. I stood up straight. “We have been deceived.” Was all I said.
Snowstar came forward out of his den. “How have we been deceived?” He asked.
I nodded in respect. “An enemy, a shadow from long ago, had taken Tigertail’s body as his own and tried to get close to me.”
Snowstar looked at me suspiciously, but then turned to the Clan. “Today, even if we not believe her words, Zenpaw has done a great deed. Let us rejoice by the naming of warriors.”
The cats gathered around Highledge as Snowstar and I walked forward. Whiteclaw, Blackpaw, and Fleettail walked in and merged with the group.
I looked over Brownclaw, Mossfluff, Fleettail, Flufffoot, Ambereye, Whiteclaw, Blackpaw, Spottedclaw, Stormclaw, Fluffpaw, Speckleleaf, Leafkit, Featherkit, Tallfoot, Swiftclaw, Sweettail, Busheye, Snowkit, Wingkit, Clawkit, Flakekit, Wingmist, Featherclaw and Snowstar. My Clan.
