                Chapter 4:

“So… you ditched me last night to take a walk in the woods and you just happened to find your friend?” Caroline asked me the next night in my room. I stopped throwing the ball I had up and down and looked at Caroline next to me on the floor.

“Well… I was meeting Stiles,” I said, careful not to tap my fingers. “He said he had a surprise for me… and on my way to him, I found Lydia.” I looked over at Amanda who I could tell was not convinced. “What?” I said with an annoyed tone. “That’s the truth.”

“Brittany Mcarthy takes a shortcut through the woods to see her boyfriend? No. I’m not buying it at all,” Amanda said as she played on my laptop. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

“It’s just that you’re not that kind of person. The kind to take walks through creepy-ass woods at night. And the kind to ditch her friends for her boyfriend,” Caroline said as she picked at my floor. I felt the guilt spread through me.

“Guys, I’m sorry. But I think you should go,” I said. “My dad’s going to be home soon, and I don’t think he’ll like that you guys came over without his permission.” More guilt poured through my body. I looked at Caroline’s hurt face. I turned away before I could change my mind. They had to go.

“Your dad never cared if we came over without his consent,” Caroline said as she stood up.

“We just wanted to talk to you. You’ve just seemed pretty strange since we’ve come here,” Amanda said as she closed my laptop and put it on my desk.

“Don’t tell her that, I told her that she seemed different yesterday and she freaked out on me,” Caroline said as she grabbed her bag. “Well, my sister’s on her way home from work and she’s coming to get me. So I guess you got what you wanted.”

“Look guys, I’m sorry!” I yelled as Caroline walked down the hallway. “I’m sorry that I’ve been acting weird, but I’ve been going through some hard things and you’re going to have to respect that.”

“Why don’t you talk to us about these things?”

“You’ve only been here a few days. Why don’t you worry about yourself. Get comfortable. Make some friends. Don’t worry about my problems,” I said as Caroline opened the door. She looked back at me and scoffed.

“Whatever,” she said. “Look, I’ll see you guys tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll be in better moods.” She walked out of the door and closed it. I looked back at Amanda who sighed.

“You’re not telling me something and I’m gonna find out what,” Amanda said as she smirked and walked over to the door. I raised my eyebrows at her. “I will find out,” she said as she backed out of the door. She tripped but caught herself before she fell. “Man, that ruined the moment. See you tomorrow.” I laughed and waved to her before closing the door. As soon as I closed it, it opened, and Stiles ran into the house.

“Hey,” Stiles said as he kissed me. “Saw Amanda out there and she told me that I shouldn’t come in here. What happened?” I sighed and sat down on the couch and he sat next to me.

“I’m trying to distance myself from them,” I said quietly as I stared out the window. I looked at Stiles and he looked surprised.
