Chapter 5:

“What the hell were you, Stiles, and Amanda doing out at night?” My dad asked as he drove Amanda and I home in his police car.

“Well, I was taking a run,” Amanda piped up in the back. My dad rolled his eyes and sighed.

“Dad, Stiles and I just wanted to take a drive and we saw that car and wondered if they needed help,” I said, trying to sound convincing.  “When we pulled over we saw the blood, and then Amanda ran up to us, and then we called 911.” My dad shook his head and gripped the wheel tighter.

“It kinda seems like you, Stiles, and Scott are at the center of all bad things happening in Beacon Hills,” my dad stated as he turned a corner. I pointed my finger at him.

“Hey, Scott wasn’t involved in this one,” I said, wondering if Stiles was on his way to Scott’s house by now. My dad wouldn’t let me drive home with Stiles because he wanted to talk to me alone. Otherwise, I’d be there. Stiles wanted to tell Scott everything that happened so we could figure out what this lizard thing was together.

“Let’s just get you home, so then I can be with you and be absolutely sure you’re going to stay in one place.” I heard Amanda laugh in the back.

                “What do you mean?”

“I never know what’s going on with you anymore. You’re always on the run and getting into trouble.” I sat up straight and stared at my dad.

“Isn’t that what teenagers are supposed to do? Get into mischief?” I asked my dad. “At least I’m not sulking in my room anymore.” I crossed my arms and stared out at the street. It was still pouring. I’d have to apologize to Amanda later for hearing my father and I bicker.

“Yes, for going to parties, drinking alcohol, doing drugs, getting bad grades,” my father listed. “Not finding girls in the woods, finding dead men in cars…”

“But at least I get good grades, right?” Amanda laughed at my comment. My dad didn’t seem amused.

“I’m not finding this very funny,” my dad growled. Amanda cleared her throat as if to dismiss the laughter. “Just please, try to stay out of trouble.”

I sighed and shrugged my shoulders. “Okay.” My dad slammed on the breaks, jerking Amanda and I forward. “What the hell, dad?” I yelled as I straightened up. He turned to me.

“No, you have to promise,” he said as he stared at me intensely in the eyes. I didn’t say anything to him. “I’ve been very worried about you lately. I don’t want anything to happen to you where I’ll never see you again.” I sighed and looked out at the rain. He was afraid that’d he’d lose me too.

“Okay, dad. I promise. Really,” I said. He nodded and gripped the wheel. He put the car out of park and started to drive again. It was completely quiet the rest of the way home.

He pulled into our driveway and put the car in park. I got out of the car and waited for Amanda to get out. When she did, I walked her to her house.

“Sorry about that,” I said, sheepishly. Amanda shrugged her shoulders.

“Happens,” she said. “There’s no need to apologize, really. Your dad’s just paranoid.” I smiled at her before walking back to my house. “There is something going on with you though, isn’t there?” Amanda yelled to me. I turned around.
