Undead Hearts

Prologue

It was a normal day for me. A natural grade nine Tuesday I like to think. I couldn't think of what would happen next. Walking into English with Jacob's arm around me was always comforting. Usually. I walked into the class and sat down. Noah, a part of my friend group had the same classes I did so Jacob and I sat at a table with him. We had this huge assignment due on Friday. We were required to write a thousand word essay on something of our choice. I hadn't even decided what my topic was yet. Across the hall from our class though was Math. The grade ten's were in there now so I could imagine Finn, Gaten, and Maddie were in there right now. Then across the hall to the left was the science lab. The grade eleven's were in the at the moment. Meaning, Sadie and Caleb were in there. I thought of a subject after thinking for a minute. 

My friends and why I love them.

I sat in between Maddie and Gaten as Ms.Solomon taught. Gaten kept nudging me as I took notes to show me memes on his phone. Eventually he broke out laughing at a really offensive meme and Ms.Solomon gave him detention and took his phone. She looked at me and flipped her hand over and held it towards me and Maddie as she brought her fingers out then in as if she were to say, "Give me your phones." I handed mine in and Maddie did too. She kept eyeing Gaten as he listened for once. Gaten just needs discipline every once and a while. I kept taking notes when I heard a knock at the door. I leaned in front of Gaten and looked through the window at the door. A man with a camouflage helmet, black balaclava, and military goggles. I saw him wave at me using a gun as Ms.Solomon grabbed the doorknob.

"WAIT!" I yelled as I stood up.

She flipped around to face me. "What is the matter." She said as she opened her eyes widely and a gunshot echoed around the class. Blood spurted from Ms.Solomon's mouth as she dropped to the floor with a bullet hole in her back. The man stepped forward. I watched the ground as a black tube rolled into the room. I pushed Gaten and Maddie down as I dropped to the ground blinded by the flashbang.

"Play dead." I whispered past the sound of gunshots.

 

I jumped from my seat when I heard the bangs. I didn't know what it was. Sadie looked worried for a second but I reassured her. I walked over to the door.

"Caleb! What do you think you're doing?" Mr.Larson yelled at me.

My natural instincts kicking in I shushed Mr.Larson and creaked the door open a crack. i watched as two men with guns started shooting into my English and Math classes. I shut the door. 

"Those are gunshots!" I yelled. 

I ran to Sadie.

"What is happening?!" She asked.
"We're going to be ok!" I reassured her. 

One of the men walked over to our door and shot Mr.Larson in the chest. He aimed at Sadie. I pushed her down and the bullet hit another kid. People started running around. A couple kids tried to run past the man but he just shot them. I looked around to a nearby cabinet. I opened the door and let sadie crawl in. Another kid opened the window and screamed for help. I watched a he was shot in the back. There was only a few kids left. One of them was just standing there. I crawled into the cabinet and shut the door. It was a fairly big cabinet. Enough for three people to stand in as Mr.Larson took the shelves out to hang off the wall and put stuff on. I turned on my phone's flashlight and set it on the ground. The cabinet lit up and I saw Sadie sitting on the ground sobbing. I crouched down and looked her in the eyes.

"We're ok. I'm going to protect you, Sadie. I promise." I whispered.
"Thank you, for always being there for me Caleb." She whispered.
"I know you better than anyone." I told her. 

I sat beside her and she rested her head on my shoulder. I put my arm around her and hugged her tightly. I blanked out. There was no more gunshots. I looked down at Sadie. She was still rested against me but was breathing heavily and wheezing.

"Sadie, it's ok. You don't have to be scared." I said as I sat up. She leaned against the wall. 
"I... Can't..." She said between wheezes. 

I tried to think. What do I do? How do I help this? Are we really going to be ok? Am I just lying? So many different questions raced in my mind. I looked at her as she struggled to breathe. She was having a panic attack. Thinking quick I grabbed her by the head and kissed her. I let go of her head as she pulled away and just stared at me, breathing normally. She just looked at me starry-eyed. I sat back down beside her and she leaned against me again. I put my arm back around her and blanked out again. When I woke back up, Sadie was asleep. I got up and leaned her softly against the wall. I went to open the door a crack as it opened itself. I backed up quickly ready to punch whoever looked inside the cabinet. I watched as a head peaked around the corner and I swung my fist, hitting them point blank in the face. I looked down as Finn fell to the ground, knocked out.

"FINN!" I exclaimed. I jumped out of the cabinet and looked to the door. Maddie, Gaten, Millie, and Noah stood there. Sadie stepped out into the room, looking at the dead bodies. One of the men was dead on the ground. I stepped over and picked up his gun. 

"What is that?!" Noah said pointing to the window.

A man stood there, just banging on it on it. He looked terrible, even inhuman. I was going to walk up to him as he was shot in the head. I looked outside and the other armed man walking towards the body. He looked into the class right at us. He stopped dead as i ran to Finn and picked him up. The man began to run to the door as we bolted out of the class.
