Chapter One: The Changed

Caleb's POV

I ran down the hall with Finn in my arms and the gun slung over my back. Everything was muffled. I heard Sadie yelling and Millie crying. Jacob was trying to comfort Millie while Maddie just kept running. I came back a second later.

"HEY!" I heard the man yell from behind me.
"RUN!" Jacob yelled.

As I turned the corner a bullet just went past my head. 

"Into the gym!" I said.

We all ran into the gym and made our way to the storage closet. There were kids lying dead on the floor everywhere. Mats were set up everywhere like a paintball field for their dodgeball game. Maddie opened the door and we all ran in. I set Finn down and peeked out the door. The lights turned off in the gym as I shut the door. 

"Shit dude." Jacob said.
"We have a weapon. I've shot one of these off at a range before everyone. Just calm down." I reassured everyone. 

I held the gun to my eyes and aimed at the door. Everyone looked worried. We all heard thumps on the wall every minute... he was circling the gym. Every time he knocked on the wall, everyone jumped from the slight scare. It went on for about ten minutes until I stepped up.

"The next time he knocks on that effing wall, I'm going to walk out there and blow his effing brains out."

Everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

"Are you kidding Caleb?! You'll get arrested!" Jacob said.
"For what?! Protecting my friends? I think not!" I yelled at him.
"Look, I didn't want to go there but do you not remember what skin color you are?!" He yelled back at me.
"Jacob, step off." Millie said.
"No Mills! I'm trying to protect Caleb! Do you not watch the news? They would eat you." 

He just stared at me with those annoying eyes that he always has. I clenched my fist.

"Seriously dude. We don't know tha-" 

Before he could finish, I decked him in the mouth. He looked at me with blood flowing down his mouth and nose. He stood up and ran at me. I pushed him down like he was the weight of a paperclip. He got back up and swung at me. I let him hit me once. Then he punched me again. Millie grabbed him and pulled him back.

"Stop Jacob! Just stop!" 

He looked at Millie sobbing.

"I can't do this!" He yelled.
"SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!" I yelled as I punched him out.
"CALEB! WHAT THE HELL?!" Millie hit me in the chest and sat down as she shook Jacob.

I walked over and kicked the door open. The lights were back on.

"COME AT ME!" I yelled.
"You don't understand do you kid?! THIS WORLD IS CHANGED. I can't wait for you to walk outside and see what is happening! I'm just helping you to not change too." 

I kicked down a mat, then punched another.

"Really?! WOULD ALL THESE KIDS AGREE?!" 

I kicked down four more of the twenty sum mats. 

"I honestly don't know! Some definitely would. You wanna step out with me kid?" The man yelled at me.

I walked to the door and watched as the man walked up to me. He grabbed my shoulder and brought me out. 

"See her." He said.

I looked at the woman that was walking down the middle of the street.

"No! I don't see that woman in the middle of the street!" I said sarcastically.

He laughed. "Let's go say hi." 
He brought me over to the woman about fifteen feet away.

"Hey. Hello?" I said.

She looked at me with blood down her face. She began to walk towards the man and I.

"What the hell?!" I yelled at him ripping my shoulder back. 

I aimed my gun at him. He laughed.

"Kid you don't understand! That woman is changed! As are all of these people!" He yelled as he pointed to the corner of the street at the four men and five women who walked towards them covered in blood with grey eyes.
"What did you do?" I asked the man.
"Me? I didn't do this! This was the work of god." 

The woman walked off the street and climbed on top of the man as he fell to the ground. She bit into his skin, pulling back. Blood rushed out of his neck.

"Run."

He looked at me and closed his eyes. I heard a loud snarl and turned around. One of those people jumped on me. I struggled to push them off. I pulled my gun back and held the trigger in hitting the man in the chest with all of the bullets. Nothing happened.

"WHAT THE HELL?!" I yelled.

It snapped its jaw at me, snarling. I held it up with the rest of my force. I looked up as the rest of the people headed towards me. I looked back at the man just as Finn kicked it in the head.

"Come on!" He said, reaching his hand out for me to grab. 

We ran back inside and into the main front door area.

Millie's POV

"Okay so these people aren't human anymore. When you and Sadie were in the cabinet Finn attacked the other man while Jacob grabbed his gun. Jacob... NOT THINKING... shot the guy in the chest. He kept calling these people The Changed." I explained.

Caleb looked at Jacob with an eyebrow raised.

"What were you saying to me earlier?!" Caleb yelled at him.

Jacob laughed. 

"What happens now then? These people are going to try to kill us!" Maddie cried.

Police sirens went off outside. We all ran out and watched the cop cars race by. One of them hit a few of The Changed and slid sideways, flipping, and crashing to the ground while the others kept going. I rushed over and swung the door open. The car was smoking and caught on fire quickly. The officer moaned and squirmed. 

"I got you officer." I said as I grabbed his hand and pulled. He wouldn't budge.

We both looked at his legs at the same time and they were stuck under the dash, completely broken.

"JESUS NO! PLEASE HELP ME! DON'T LET ME DIE!" He screamed at me.
"MILLIE!" Finn yelled.

I turned to face Finn as he jumped on top me and we landed in the grass. The police car blew up. I looked up at Finn who was hovering on top of me. He shook his head and stood up. He extended his hand to me.

"Sorry."

I smiled and hugged him.

"You just saved my life." I told him.

I looked over as Caleb and Gaten punched a few of the Changed to the ground but they didn't die. Finn walked over and stomped on their heads and they stopped moving. I walked over to Jacob and patted him on the back. 

"You're a great boyfriend." I said sarcastically.
"What did I do?!" 

"Everything"
