Just An Empty House

Jeff's scared and sad eyes look into mine, "w.. What? How? She's dead!" He lays me on my back and gets up to face his old house.

Sighing quietly, I get up. "I don't understand it either Jeff... I really don't. Your father was also there too."

Jeff's hands curl into tight balls, "no! Its impossible! They-" The front door of the house slowly creaks open. Both Jeff and I look at it as it fully opens by itself. Jeff turns and looks over his shoulder at me. I shrug at him and cautiously step up the old concrete steps, onto the front porch and into the house.

Everything is dark which makes it hard to see. I cough from the dust stirring after sitting there for so many years. Cobwebs drape over lights, corners and almost everything in the room. A loud creak behind me makes me jump and slap whatever is behind me.

"Ow!" I hear Jeff grunt, "the hell was that for?"

I giggle and blush in embarrassment, "sorry Jeff... I thought you were some creep trying to grab me or something."

"God Jane, that hurt..." I faintly see his arm move as he reaches up to rub his tender cheek.

"I didn't hit you that hard..." I mumble.

Jeff whimpers in the darkness, "you hurt my beautiful face!"

"Wow. Jeff, really."

"Yes! How am I supposed to pick up fangirls now?"

I sigh at him, "stop being such a baby." I then cut the conversation off by going into another dark room. My hands pat my body, looking for my phone. Of course, I don't have it with me. Freaking dresses and their unexisting pockets. "Jeff, do you have your phone?"

Cold plastic plops into my hand and I look down to see Jeff's phone. "Thanks." I turn the smartphone on and look for the flashlight app, then turn it on. I scan the room with the makeshift flashlight and notice that we are in the kitchen. Memories pour into my mind of when Jeff and I would annoy his mom by begging for food. A smile slowly spreads on my face, but those days are over. I look over to were Jeff was.

But he isn't there, so I move the light around until I find him. His back is towards me and is slightly hunched over an object in his hand. I quietly walk up to him and shine the light over the object, its a picture frame. Inside the frame is a happy, smiling family of four. A mother, father, and two sons. Jeff is in front of his dad, his light brown hair, which is almost blonde looking, is cut to a medium length with bangs in the front. His blue eyes are looking into the camera happily.

Next to him is a taller boy, his hand on Jeff's shoulder. He is also giving a happy grin which makes his green eyes light up. His hair is the same length as Jeff's, but a darker brown with his bangs hanging over his left eye.

"This is my family..." Jeff says slowly, then runs a finger lightly down the picture of himself.

"Yes. That's you." My eyes turn to look into his, but his hair is hanging down, shielding his face from my view. "Are you okay Jeff?"

He places the picture frame down, "I'm fine. Why are we in here anyway? This place isn't important, its just an empty house." His back turns to me, his shoulders lift, then sag as he sighs deeply.

A voice deeper then Jeff's coming from the doorway shocks us both and we jump. "Its more then that, Jeffrey. Welcome home."

I turn the flashlight to see the taller boy from the picture standing there, but instead of being happy and cheerful, his mouth is frowning and his eyes are sad and have a lonesome look into them. His face is coated with cut filled with stitches across his nose, neck, from the corner of his mouth, like half of Jeff's signature grin, everywhere.

Jeff stiffens at the sight of the older boy. "Liu..."
