When Rachel and I finally calmed down enough to speak, still giggling here and there, I wiped the tears from my eyes and looked at our visitor. "Cameron, what are you doing here?" I asked curiously with a giggle, and he smiled as he looked at me, hands in his pockets.
"Was hungry for a something to munch on, and I had to pick up some snacks anyway, but unexpectedly, as I'm strolling through the aisles close by, I just so happened to hear two very giggly girls, and my curiosity got the better of me. So what are you two ladies doing here, and what's with the fort?"
"We were bored, and we decided it was time to actually get out and do something crazy and fun," Rachel responded.
"Ah, I see. And I don't suppose you two are also responsible for the Deadpool notes posted on soap bottles, are you?" he said, more as a statement than a question.
"Absofreakinglutely. Only we are capable of such awesome acts." I retorted and crossed my arms.
"Why am I not surprised." he mused as he shook his head.
"Because you know us too well," I said with a smirk.
"Since I found you here... Do you guys want to go to the docks? Aron is having a party tonight for his birthday. Nothing big though. I know he'd love it if you guys came. Extra snacks for the party are actually why I'm here, as I previously stated."
"Ooh, Aron you say? Mister hottie of the team?" Rachel mused with interest, though her expression was almost disappointed before she actually spoke as if she were hurt that she hadn't known about the party.
Aron was part of the football team at school, and he also happened to be one of the best looking. He was tall and had a bulky and toned kind of build, his eyes were a deep green, and he had semi-long ashy blonde hair that was always silky smooth. His face was chiseled, and to put it simply, he was like the Adonis of the school. Though no doubt Cameron was the football star. Rachel had had a crush on Aron for as long as we had known the guy, and there was no doubt in my mind that if we went to the party, she would make her move. It was a bit surprising that Aron didn't have a girlfriend, because he was one of the guys in the school that every girl wanted, even as a freshman upperclassmen girls had wanted him. Cameron beamed with a spark of knowing and grinned. "Yes, dear sweet Rachel. That Aron. So you guys in?" he asked curiously.
Rachel beat me to the punch of answering. "Of course we're going! Let's go!" She squealed with excitement.
"Rachel wait! Down girl, put it away for now. We have to clear out everything in here. They tolerated us moving things but the least we can do is put things back." I said with a quirky smile, and she only pouted.
"Fine." she huffed out in frustration.
"You girls go ahead. I'll take care of things here. I still have to do the bit of shopping I came here for anyway. I'll catch up with you at the party okay?" Cameron said with a smile, and I looked at him and couldn't help but smile back with admiration.
Cameron had always been a chill, down to earth kind of guy who did a lot of things for others, and it was beyond admirable. "Cameron, it's fine, we couldn't possibly..." I started to say, but Rachel cut me off.
"We most certainly can! Thanks, Cam! You're the best! Come on Jacie, let's go!" She exclaimed as she grabbed my hand and started dragging me out.
Cameron simply laughed and waved us on without even trying to stop her, and about halfway through the store, I finally stopped letting her drag me and began walking on my own. I had to speed walk to keep pace with her as we headed out to her car, and I couldn't help but look back, wondering if Cameron was really okay with cleaning up our mess. There really was a lot to admire about him, and I'd had all of my high school life to do so. I shook my head and pushed aside the thought. There was no use in worrying about it now, mostly because it didn't matter. Rachel would drag me out the rest of the way even if she had to do it while I was kicking and screaming like a child. There was nothing that she would let stand in her way of getting to go hit on Aron and make her move. She'd always been able to drop subtle hints to him, and flirt a little, but she'd never had too many chances to meet with him after school. In school they were always busy with school work, too many other people were around, especially girls, or she would just never see him. After school, she used to wait until their football practice was over, but she gave up when his fellow teammates would keep his attention or he had to cut conversation short due to a ton of homework. There was no doubt in my mind that she was going to take full advantage of tonight to make a move at him. They'd talked before, he knew us, especially her, and he was a pretty cool guy. Sometimes, on the very rare occasions that they got to actually talk, he would smile a bit too much when he talked to her, and I used to take note of how he would look at her when she danced at school dances. There was always a spark in his eyes. I was no expert when it came to being able to tell if one person liked another person but I didn't doubt that he admired her, at least a little bit, but he made no other signs of actually liking her, not from what I could tell, but again, what did I know?
We made it out to Rachel's car and both got in, and with no patience at all, she pulled out of her parking spot and headed out, turning a bit too fast. I understood her excitement, and she was always a careful driver, except when she got excited, then it was suddenly "all other drivers beware", and I would have to calmly remind her that she wasn't the only person in the vehicle, and she wasn't the only person driving on the road. When she noticed me tense in the passenger seat, she calmed down and took a deep breath but kept smiling. There was no hiding her excitement. Sometimes I swore, if I didn't know any better, I'd say she was in love with Aron, almost as if she had been for the past couple hundred years or so. The idea was amusing and I couldn't help but smile at the thought.
