Your P.O.V.
"Don't do thiiiis." I whined. I had been running only for ten minutes at most but it seemed to be too much for my body to handle as I was so out of shape and still in the dress that Aphmau made me wear before we left. Not to mention I also had no shoes on.
"Just stop running and we'll talk." I heard Gene say behind me. I wanted to trust him. After all, I thought he had been dead for the past 3 weeks. However I knew something was wrong. Just something about the way he approached me while the girls were finishing their drinks didn't feel right. I hope they're okay.
It was dark outside now. It somehow made everything feel even more terrifying. I stared at my shadow in front of me that was cast by the amber light of the street lights. It was running too. Like a scared animal for it's life. Is that really what I look like right now?
"I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!" I yelled. It was hard to breathe now but I had to let out my fear and frustration in that one sentence.
"Then stop."
I didn't hear Gene's footsteps anymore after that. Did he stop running? I turned my head around to see but I didn't stop just yet. He had indeed stopped running and just stood there under the soft glow of one of the lights. My brain must have thought that danger was avoided or something because I felt my body stop and turn around to face him. We stood quite a long distance apart but I'm sure he could tell how tired I was without even having to come near me.
I took deep breaths, hoping that my breathing and rapidly beating heart would go back to normal. Even my stomach hurt like hell after that. Lets just hope those pancakes stay down.
"Jeez I can hear you panting from here. It's okay. Just come here and we'll talk." Gene spoke. I am so close to my neighbourhood though. I'm sure someone would be able to see me from their windows if I walk up a little further. But if I come over to him, no one would be able to see if something were to happen.
"Don't you trust me?" He asked after a while of silence during which I was thinking about what to do.
"I..."
I want to trust him. I felt tears forming in my eyes. They started to fall one by one and I fell to the ground with them. I'm exhausted. I won't be able to run from him anymore. He took a step forward.
"Stop!" I yelled at him, "Don't come near me."
I can't trust him. Not yet. And certainly not right after what just happened.
"I won't hurt you. I just want to discuss something important with you." He replied.
I thought about it for a bit. What if he's telling the truth? But why would he have told me to run and proceed to chase me?
"Can we have this conversation at home?" I questioned.
"Why? Do you feel safer with Dante now?"
"What... how do you...?"
"You don't think I've been doing nothing for the past three weeks, do you?"
"...you were stalking me?"
"Not exactly. But I vaguely know what you've been up to." He took another step forward.
"How...?"
"It doesn't matter. We need to have a serious talk. I'm afraid it can't wait."
"We're not that far from home. We can talk on our way there if you want."
"I guess you have a point. Lets go then." He walked over to me to help me get up. I felt butterflies in my stomach as my hand touched his. What...? Why now?
"Thank you." I said.
"No problem. Now lets hurry."
We started walking towards our house a little quicker than I would have liked. The rough surface of the footpath and the small occasional stone particles were hurting my bare feet. I tried to keep my distance from Gene to calm down a little but it seemed like even my own body was betraying me because every few minutes I'd end up right beside him again. Why is it so damn hard to stay away?!
"May I ask something?" I broke the silence.
"Of course."
"Are you really alive?"
"As surprising as it may be, yes. You're not crazy."
"What is it that you wanted to say?" I asked.
"I'm sure you're wondering how I'm still alive and where I've been all this time."
"Yeah."
"Well, about an hour after you left the hospital I woke up again. After a pretty weird dream too, might I add. Anyways. I don't remember much from then as I was in a state of total confusion but the nurse explained to me later that week what had happened. Apparently when I woke up I asked to see you but the nurse told me that the bullet had just been removed so I wasn't allowed to leave yet and that you were gone. Then I asked her not to tell anyone I survived."
"Why?"
"I don't know. As I said, I don't even remember having this conversation. But two days ago, when I felt that I was able to move around enough, I decided to just leave because there was just something off about the nurse."
"So how come you didn't go home?" I asked.
"Shortly after I had left the hospital your father found me and pretty much kidnapped me. He didn't hurt me though. All he did was just ask for a favour."
"How...? Why...? What did he ask?"
"He asked me to kill you."
