dawn's light moved slow to light the village as it was barely peeking over the mountain tops as if it were a small mice struggling to survive looking around to see that it was safe to come out of hiding , The thick humid air was enough to make you feel sick . But not enough for hiccup Haddock to halt in his work .
He held three rusty nails in his mouth mainly held by biting his teeth down onto them softly , grimacing a bit at the bitter metallic taste , He swung the hammer back before ramming it straight back into his target hitting the nail perfectly into its place .
He huffed looking over his work , It was a simple baby crib with the soft brown pine tree wood that was bare of its skin and wood was smoothed off . He ran his arm over his forehead to remove any off the sweat running down his temple . He still had to make sure he had enough blanket's to place inside , And that he remembered to grab the stuffed dragon his mom made for the child .
The air was thick and smelt like a fire had just been burst out hours before , " What are you doing up so early lad' ? " Gobber asked as he walked into the workshop having his attachment mug in place of his missing hand . Hiccup huffed leaning against the desk were they gave the prepared weapons to the awaiting Vikings but no one was seen so early in the morning .
" Just making some last minute changes to the crib " He explained running a hand through his hair , He would have to explain to a Hot-Headed Astrid later to why he was missing . Gobber carefully loosened the thick itchy rope that was holding the mug in place , " You need to stop stressing so much , Astrid's fine and the baby will be too " .
Hiccup sighed crossing his arms looking down , He wished for his best friend to be standing there still not one-hundred percent used to him being gone . On multiple occasions he would look to his side with a smile expecting a large black dragon that could terrify anyone known to man kind , But by heart he was a gentle kind creature his goofy smile could make the saddest of people happy again .
But alas such a creature was nowhere to be seen only to be hit by the fact ' Toothless is gone , Right ' And how he remembered the large beast lie there before him forest green eyes filled with dread before setting his large head down onto the rough cold dirt ground simply accepting the fact that he was not going to get out of the situation Alive . He shook the thought out of his head not wanting to go own memory lane right now " I know " He stated simply " I just " He began pausing mid-sentence staring off into nothing " needed to get up and get things off of my mind " He explained .
Gobber nodded as he tied on his usual hammer in place of his missing hand , he remembered when Gobber was telling the story of how he lost his arm to a dragon though he wasn't listening very carefully Hiccup chuckled a bit at the thought " Hiccup ! " the chief snapped back to reality and his head turned to the voice calling his name . " Hiccup - " His mother ran over halting to a stop resting her hands on her knees .
" Mom ? " He questioned turning to frantically exit the workshop , " What's wrong ? " He asked She looked up to him " A-Astrid's - The baby " She explained in a short breath . His eyes widened adrenaline started pumping through his veins as he started sprinting to his hut His breath quickened blurs of green and brown brushed past quickly in the corner of his eyes .
The wind whipped against his face , Causing him to have to squint his eyes only allowing him to see so far ahead . He did his best to steady his breaths carefully , His shoes sunk into the mud causing it to splash up his leg he was running so fast he though his metal leg would fall off in seconds .
