Elfen Lied's title comes from the poem "Elfenlied" (Elf Song) written in 1837 by the German author Eduard Morike in 1888. The poem even refered once to Silpelit (a name made up by Morike) which in the anime is a term used to denote a "diclonius" born from human parents.
