The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature usually doesn't stray away from Disney and Pixar movies, but in 2003, the anime movie Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards.
However, Hayao Miyazaki (the director of the movie) didn't attend the ceremony because of his opposition to the Iraq war.
