Second Year

I lie in bed after yesterday's full moon. James, Sirius and Peter have been trying to help me as best as they can, but that isn't much. Being a werewolf is something you have to go through alone but that doesn't stop them trying to come with me. I hate feeling dangerous and distant from my friends. When I'm a werewolf, I lose all my human senses, I barely know what's happening. I get so scared.

Sometimes I see Pettigrew watching me wearily, and I feel James and Sirius' eyes on my back as I creep out. I can feel their gaze burning into me, I know what they are thinking. That I'm a freak.

I'm lost in thought as I hear Sirius coming over. I make room for him at the bottom of my bed and feel his hand brush against mine. He then pitches another one of his ridiculous schemes to help me.

"C'mon! I'm sure it won't be that difficult to become animagi! You and James are really smart!" he reassures me.

"You do realise this will be illegal and highly dangerous?" I ask.

He smiles at me and shrugs.

He runs the plan past me a million more times and, although I know it could never work, I can't help but hope. Seeing Sirius so excited and brave and determined to keep me safe is so comforting. He puts an arm around me and sighs. I know that it is all going to be okay, as long as I have them.

I go down to the common room before breakfast and see James and Peter and Sirius. He smiles at me and asks if he can pitch his idea to the rest of the "Marauders." I let out a small laugh and nod.

Sirius repeats the plan to James and Peter and James immediately jumps up and starts assigning everyone animals. At one point he says that Sirius could be a moose.

"Are we actually doing this?" Peter asks, "I mean, I'm not sure about the whole a-anima-anim-animig-g thing-"

"AnimaGAY!" Sirius blurts out.

There is an awkward silence and I give Sirius a side glance.

Later that day we are wandering around the halls during break and I suggest we go to the library to do some research on the history of animagi. James and Sirius let out a groan and start discussing their animals again. As Peter and I start reading and listening to James and Sirius' conversation, I realise this is going to take some time. After looking through a couple of books on Transfiguration and Animagi, I find a few useful nuggets of information, but basically nothing.

James rushes off to practice his Quidditch and Sirius comes over and rests his chin on my shoulder. He skims his eyes over the titles of my books. "I'm gonna go and find some," he says. He brings over a pile of books and hands me some. Dragging a chair over next to me, we begin to read, scanning our eyes over the contents and furiously flipping through the many pages. After a while Sirius drags his hand through his messy hair and leans back in his chair. "I couldn't find a thing useful to us!" he exclaims, annoyed, "All the books say is that the process is time-consuming and requires lots of practice and skill and shit! This is what they would be teaching the Third Years."

One book says something about a potion, but nothing about how to make it. After about an hour, I've not got much more. Sirius and I ask Peter if he'd found anything useful. He shows me a passage about an incantation, Amato Animo Animato Animagus, but again there were no details that would actually tell us when and how to do it. "Well, this afternoon has been a pretty colossal waste of time," Sirius says. All we have is that becoming an Animagus is hard and takes time and skill, something I already knew, and that it involves a potion and incantation somewhere. Not very helpful.
