Sirius POV

"Okay! I'll do it when you do it, James!"

"Fine. On three, Siri."

"Guys this is gross."

"Shut it, Peter!" James and I say in unison.

Remus peeks out from between his fingers. "Do you really want to do this?"

I take him by the shoulders and look into his concerned, pale green eyes. "Stop questioning it. Please. We want to do this for you," I say. "Okay. I'm ready."

We raise the mandrake leaves to our mouths.

"Three," Peter winces.

"Two," Remus squeezes my arm.

"One," I stuff the leaf into my mouth. A sour, citrusy taste floods my mouth, followed by the taste of... dirt. Wow.

James slaps me on the back. "Time to get used to this!"

Since dinner, the rain's really picked up, causing some stray first years to huddle around the fire. It's the first electrical storm since we tried the mandrake leaves, but we need to wait for curfew if we want to leave unnoticed. Luckily, we were told to go to our common rooms early today because of the storms. So with James, Peter and I under the cloak, we follow Remus up to the Shrieking Shack.

The wind tugs at the cloak violently until we take it off, for fear of losing it. I can see Remus shaking, partly out of fear and partly from the sheer cold coming from the worsening storm. I walk up to him and wrap my arm around him, he sends me a grateful smile, and I hold him close to me.

"You don't have to do this you know," he mumbles, avoiding my eyes.

It takes a couple seconds for me to process what he's saying.

"Remus," I say, taking both his hands in mine, looking directly into his eyes, "We are doing this for you, don't feel guilty, no-one should have to go through this alone, and especially not you."

"I- I just-"

"No, you cannot feel guilty, besides, being an Animagus will be awesome, imagine all the pranks we can pull on Snivellus!" I joke, trying to lighten the mood.

We continue to walk up to the shack, still holding Remus' hand tightly.

Remus POV

Lightning lights up the sky with a loud boom, like a giant is up there in the sky, banging a drum. The rain splatters on us, plastering my hair to my frozen face. I can't believe James, Peter and Sirius are doing this for me. I look over at them, holding their potion vials to their chests. My eyes rest on Sirius, his long curly hair a tangled, wet mess. His strong frame clear through his soaking shirt. His eyes darting from James to Peter to me. His mouth, moving slightly as he mutters to himself. Another crack of thunder shakes the ground, breaking me out of my reverie.

"Come on," James yells over the patter. "Let's do it!"

Sirius reaches for my hand. His pinkie finger twists around mine. I rest my head on his shoulder. He is shaking. Out here, right now, his strong, "don't care" façade has disappeared. He's scared, but he's him. The real Sirius.

"It'll be okay," I whisper. He nods. CRACK. The sky screams. The other three jump, but I continue on unfazed.

"Umm..." James panics a bit.

"Come on guys, quick," I whisper-shout. "When I say go... Go!"

"Amato Animo Animato Animagus!" they chant in unison, before sculling their potions. Sirius buries his head in my chest and the four of us stumble back to the Gryffindor Tower. Sirius stayed that way for a long time. Lying on my bed, he begins to snore into me. There was nowhere else I'd rather be.
