A Visit at School

A few weeks pass with every spare moment Avi and I have being spent together. We never went beyond kissing, though there was plenty of kissing going on. I was getting to be better friends with everyone in Pentatonix, which is like a dream come true.  I even got to the point where I could tolerate Scott.

My job at Jordan gets easier. I start to have kids who are really interested in music asking me questions. Most of them are things about music theory or about if I know of any voice coaches or things like that. But there was one girl, her name is K.C., who started asking about how I pick the music. I kept saying I didn’t really have a process but she wouldn’t take it, so she kept asking.

“I guess I just look through the music I have here and when I think something is interesting, I try to listen to it. If I like it and it makes sense for one of the choirs, then I pick it. If I’m not sure, I ask my boyfriend about it. He does a lot of arranging with his Acapella group, so he’s good at recognizing when an arrangement just isn’t going to work out.” I told her one day.

“Acapella group? Which one? Would I know them?” K.C. asks.

“Probably, at least if you seriously listen to Acapella, then you will have heard them. Who do you listen to?” I tell her.

“Umm, well there’s Straight No Chaser, Pitch Slapped, The Silhouettes, and my all-time favorites, Pentatonix. Any of those? Which part does he sing? Or is he a beat boxer?” she asks.

“They are in there, and he’s the bass. Who do you think it is?” I want to see if she guesses correctly.

“Are you dating Avi Kaplan from PTX?” I nod. “OH, MY GOD! NO WAY! PLEASE TELL ME THEY MIGHT COME PERFORM FOR US SOME TIME.” She yells. Suddenly, our fairly private conversation, isn’t anymore. I have a room full of eighth graders asking who she was talking about and why she was yelling. They really aren’t being quiet about it either.

“What is going on in here, Ms. Jennings? Control your class, please. Oh, there is a young man here who said that you left your lunch at home. I assume he’s your boyfriend…he asked if he could bring it to you. Should I let him come in?” The principal says, coming in from the hallway.

“I am very sorry about that, Mr. Anderson. Sure, he can come in.” Mr. Anderson leaves the room and I turn to my class, “You all have to be on your best behavior for me, okay?” I make them promise to be good and then I let my visitor in.

Avi walks in and I glance around the room. In the corner, K.C. and some of her friends are visibly restraining themselves. “Hi, Avi,” one of them says in the otherwise silent room.

“Hi,” he says back with his signature gorgeous smile. He looks at me, “Babe, you left your lunch at home. I told the group I needed to bring it to you and they were going nuts. Oh, I have a surprise for your class as well.”

All my girls made little “aww” sounds when he called me babe. Everyone went still when he mentioned a surprise. He pulls out his phone and sends a quick text, not letting me see who it is to.

Eric, my only guy whose voice has changed, speaks up, “Hey, Avi. What’s your range? Just curious,” he asks.
