It’s the last day before Pentatonix leaves for tour, and I have a special plan for today. While Avi is still asleep, I slip out to my kitchen to call an old friend.

“Hey, Anne? I need to ask you for a favor.”

“Oh, hey, Arya. What do you need?” she asks.

“I was wondering if I could take out two of the horses today. I’ve been trying to find time to get my boyfriend back on a horse and he leaves for work tomorrow. So can I?” I beg.

“Sure. So, you’ll obviously want Shosti, but who else will you want, because some of our horses are having some health issues right now.” Anne tells me.

“Oh no, who? What’s wrong?” I can’t help but be very nervous, all of the horses I rode for years are in that barn and if they’re sick, that scares me.

“Just Letrado, nerve damage in his shoulder, Gabe, something wrong with his fetlocks, and King. We think we might have to put him down. But everyone else that’s one of mine is fine to take.” Anne explains. My heart sinks when I hear Letrado’s name. He is one of the sweetest and most beautiful horses at Birchrun. I had hoped Avi could ride him.

“Thanks, Anne. If you wanna come down and watch like you always do, feel free.” I offer.

“I will. Just let me know when you get here.” And with that, we hang up. I go back to my room and quietly dig out my only pair of reinforced leggings, my only pair of leggings, if I really think about it. I just have something about leggings, I just don’t wear them. I throw my chaps and boots in my trunk and head back to wake up Avi.

“I have a surprise for you, get dressed.” I whisper in her ear.

He grumbles something like, “this better be good,” but hauls himself out of bed anyway. He looks at me and raises an eyebrow, this being the first time he’s seen me in leggings.

“What are we doing?” he asks.

“Like I’m going to ruin the surprise. Just make sure you’ll be warm enough, we are going to be outside for a while and it’s February. Oh, and wear your combat boots.” I tell him and he looks concerned.

When we’re in the car, Avi asks, “Arya, I’m not going to ask where we’re going, I just want to know if there is any chance I could get hurt.”

“I guess there is a chance, but it’s not likely. Now, shh. Anne is expecting us in a few minutes.” I say, eyes on the road. Five minutes we pull into my usual parking space at the barn. Avi’s face lights up like a little kid on Christmas.

“Are we really? Who’s horses are we gonna ride?” he asks, bouncing in his seat.
