I woke earlier than usual, getting up around ten when it would normally be twelve. I opened the heavy drapes that covered my window, and I believe I had never been so happy to see the sun. I smiled happily and then went about my usual routine – taking a shower, watching a movie, eating, checking the news, and I eventually decided to go grocery shopping. Before I left I applied my usual makeup and left the extra flourishes for later when I was getting ready for work.I gave myself a once over. My bright, naturally henna red hair stood out against my fair colored but nice and soft skin. The green t-shirt I had on complimented my emerald eyes very nicely, and my snug-fitting camouflage Capri’s gave me a sort of tough girl look. I laughed at the thought and threw on my silky black ballet flats just before I left.
Coincidentally, I saw Jeanette at the store. I was walking past all the cereal and other boxed snack foods when she spotted me and began to wave frantically. I laughed at her and strode over to her spot by the fruit roll-ups and such.
“Hey.” I said with a smile and we hugged each other.
“Hi! Heyyy, what was with you and that guy last night? He was pretty hot! What happened?” She asked in a gossip kind of way. Jeanette and I had never really been best buddies, but you could say we were close friends since she was just about my only one. I thought for a minute on what to tell her and decided I may change a few things around.
“Well, he came in with that group that started the fight not too long ago,” she nodded when she remembered the one and I continued. “I’d only just been introduced to him because I was their server, and he came and asked me if I wanted to dance. I said yes, but it just felt weird, so I got Cassie to save me.” I relayed the information. Jeanette didn’t look satisfied, but she still looked surprised. Cassie, or Cassandra, was our boss as you might have guessed.
“Wow. Well, maybe he’ll come in again; he seemed really into you!” She said in a chipper tone as we began to walk along.
“I have no doubt he will.” I tried not to sound too put-out, but I knew he would be back, and it actually kind of scared me. I mean, come on, vampires are capable of anything. I glanced at my watch and it read twelve-thirty. “Hey, I should get going, I’m gonna get to work an hour early so I can talk to Cassie and help with the rush.” I said and patted Jeanette on the shoulder. She agreed and waved goodbye.
Soon enough I was out to my car, loading the groceries in the trunk, when I went to shut it and got a glimpse into the past hour I had been in the store. Someone had touched my trunk, but not in the passer-by way or the admiration way. This person was the complete opposite of that. And, actually, they wanted to kill me by the looks of it.
They were carrying a concealed pistol and dagger, looking frustrated that I wasn’t coming out of the store. In fact, they had waited there for about twenty minutes while I was inside chatting casually with Jeanette. As the person, a man I noted, walked away, he muttered something about a ‘vampire whore.’ It didn’t take me long to realize he’d been talking about me.
Shit.
I ducked just in time as a bullet flew past me and hit a truck in the parking space across the row from me. I looked around and saw the shooter running for his life because he knew he hadn’t hit his target. A vampire hunter? A fucking vampire hunter was after me? What the hell!
I got in my car fast and drove five miles faster than the speed limit all the way home, luckily not running into any cops. It was around one o’clock when I got inside, and I cursed. I would have to wait a few more hours before any vamps rose from their graves. Cassie, as far as I knew, woke up around four and got to work thirty minutes later since it was still winter and the sun set pretty early. I could always use extra tips, and I was probably safer in the bar around all those people than I was in my apartment by myself. I may just want to go to work two hours earlier.
