Seven Years Later

The cool sea breeze bit at my checks as I walked along a beach of Coast City. It was a surprisingly cool July night.

July 25, my birthday. I'm eleven today...god I wish I could leave already I hate this place. I thought to myself. I looked up at the clear night sky, the stars above twinkling against the black void they laid in. I took a deep breath as my hands ghosted over the bruises, fresh ones and old one, and the scars that didn't plan to leave my skin anytime soon on my arms. I stared at the sky, wondering what it was like up there, wanting to fly through the Earth's sky like Superman and into space to see what it held for me.

A flash of green streaked the sky for a split second, and in a blink of an eye it was gone just as suddenly as it came. I passed it off as a comet or something just passing us by, and kept staring at the sky.

Then, the same green glow came from behind me. I turned, keeping my legs and feet in the same position as I looked back to see the source. The brightness seemed to blind me for a second, then the glow seemed to reside, for me to see a small green ring. I blinked at it, there was no one else there, no one holding the ring out to me. It was suspended in the air, by itself.

"What the hell..?" I murmured. It stayed there, floating in the air, and not answering me at all. It seemed to be...waiting. But for what? I thought. I tentatively reached out, thinking it might flinch and fly away, but it didn't. I slowly reached under it with an open palm. It gave one final glow, then fell into my hand.

I drew my hand closer to me and held up the ring, inspecting it. There was a circle, engraved in the circle was the symbol of a lantern. It looked...vaguely familiar, almost like something from a dream...

Some vague voice in my head seemed to persuade me to slip it onto my ring finger. I don't know why I listened, but I did. Nothing happened for about a second, and then I was jerked into the sky.

The ring flew me away so fast it was hard for me to realize I was even in space. Then, I landed with a crash on a seemingly glowing green planet.

"Reyna Sanchez..." an unfamiliar voice boomed above me. I looked up to see seven tall, rock made pillars towering above me, though only six of them were occupied by little blobs, or seemingly blobs, I assume they were some kind of person, as they seemed to be almost too sentient.

"Uh...yes?" I said, and immediately regretted. Not because they were mad, because I sounded so awkward and it was a dumb response. I should have said, Yes, that's me how do you know who I am? but no. I just had to be socially awkward!

"You have been chosen" another voice boomed, coming from the far right while the other came from the far left of the pillars, next to where the empty one stood.

"Sorry...chosen for what exactly?" god I sounded so awkward.

"Have you not heard of the Green Lanterns on Earth?" one next to the voice on the far right asked, more a baffled statement than a question.

"I do recall there being three before she was chosen" the one next to the voice on the right spoke this time.

"No I have! I just...didn't know this was what it was...sorry..." I interjected quickly. Now the ring looking familiar made much more sense. I had seen it for a second when...

"Welcome back Hal Jordan." the one in the middle finally spoke, looking behind me. I turned, and let out the breath I didn't realize I was holding in. Seeing a somewhat familiar face was revealing to say the least. He landed softly next to me, and looked up to the pillars.

"Hey, why am I here exactly?" He asked.

"You have a new assignment, training our newest Green Lantern from Earth, your homeworld." The middle spoke again. Then Hal looked at me, then shock took over his features.

"You've got to be kidding me, shes just a kid!" Hal exclaimed, concerned, not outraged.

"You know full well how the rings work Hal Jordan, we do not chose the Lanterns, the rings do. What's done is done." the middle spoke once again. Hal's jaw clenched. The middle seemed to turn to me. "Welcome to the Green Lantern Crops Reyna Sanchez."
