One night I was cuddling with my boyfriend and dog.

It was a pleasant night as I remember and it was raining lightly. We were watching Netflix and having a drink. I remember the time exactly, it was 9:52 at night on June 6th. My boyfriends phone rang and it was his mom. She told him his brother was in a car crash and he needed to get to the hospital. He rushed out and left the house. I stayed at home with the dog because the hospital was only letting in close family members. So I was sitting in the living room still watching planet earth on netflix and worrying for his brother. The rain got harder and harder and started to hit the roof of the house with fury. The thunder started at around 10:30 and then the lightning started to flash. By 11 the power went out.

"Hey, the power went out. when will you be back and how is your brother doing?" I texted my boyfriend

"He'll be good. I think, I might stay here tonight but if not I'll be back by around 1." he sent back

I sat up watching YouTube on my phone and at around 12:30 i heard the sliding glass door shift a little bit. I was certain it was my boyfriend so I walked up to unlock the door when I heard the door making a soft clicking noise. Then the worst thing possible happened, lightning flashed and I saw the silhouette of a man who was too big to be my boyfriend. He was at least 6' 5" and was hunched over working on lock. I was so scared I could have crapped myself right there. I didn't think he saw me so I crept to the bedroom and grabbed our baseball bat. I was back slowly, waiting for the lightning to flash again. When the light flashed outside to my horror the door was open already. I felt my heart drop and my stomach get heavy. I almost screamed right there but I stayed quiet and tip-toed back to the bedroom. I shut the door slowly and locked it.

"omg somebody broke in and the power is out please come home!" I texted my boyfriend.

I then dialed 911 and waited, "911 what's your emergency?" the dispatcher asked

"Please send police to 2251 north 4th street. Somebody broke into my house."

"Is the person still there?" they asked

"Yes, I think so." I said softly

"Police will be there shortly--" I stopped listening when the bedroom door started to be pushed on.

"They're trying to get into my bedroom right now." I said into the phone.

Then in one swift movement the door got kicked in.I screamed and the man walked up and grabbed my hair. I dropped the phone. I could hear the dispatcher trying to say something but it was muffled. He pulled me by my hair across the room and then threw me at the wall and kicked me in the gut. Out of air I tried running but he pushed me down and got on top of me and started to choke me. I bit his thumb as hard as I could and he screamed. Everything felt like it went in slow motion. It was so dark in the room I stumbled around looking for the bat. I grabbed it and huddled in the corner of the room. The lightning flashed and I saw him crouched over in pain.

My mouth tasted like blood while I walked up. Once I was behind him I hit him over the head with the bat repeatedly until the bat snapped in two.
