She had looked at me with what sounded to me like a great confusion as she asked and I replied with nothing but a nod or shake of my head and a polite enough smile.
My nerves chained my words back, controlling my every utterance, or lack thereof.
I felt bad.
I had no choice.
She simply smiled, understanding in some way, judging in others.
She bid me good day and I nodded again courteously before leaving, the little bell tinkling above the door as it opened and shut.
I stared down at the bouquet in my arms. I'd always loved sunflowers and figured they'd fit right in my kitchen to brighten the place up a bit. After all, it looked a bit dull with years of neglect.
They'd hopefully bring some sunshine into my life, if only for a short while.
Of course, that wasn't the only reason I had gone to the florists.
The florist herself was called Katelyn Mayhew (judging by the business cards I noticed sitting on the counter) and I was glad to see a pretty name attached to a pretty face.
Initially, I tried to deny it to myself that I was slightly infatuated, but I just couldn't. My determination to one day strike a conversation with her was the only thing stopping me from succumbing to anxiety and never wanting to see her again.
Knowing my unfortunate luck, she would have a boyfriend. And she wouldn't be interested in me at all- a man with barely half a voice from the city and who's only had one girlfriend. And that was the most temporary thing I'd ever had. Of course, that certainly didn't end well.
I had to try.
Right?
Because it felt like something.
And I never believed in love at first sight.
But this could be different.
