I remember one day, I came out of work. My life felt like it hadn't begun, the pain of going through it lifelessly felt as if I had nothing left. The sound of bustling trains and soft snow drifting down from the dark sky, the cold burning my cheeks. It was a normal day until I had seen her, her laugh was like a soft bell as her pale hand streched out to me as if she knew me. She smiled brightly, her lips full and round. Her cheeks were just as red as mine but they seemed to have more color. She seemed like a burst of color in the grayscale city I was born into, she almost seemed out of place.
Even though I had just seen her, I took her hand and I almost smiled as she took mine gratefully. She pulled into her world, describing her vision of the world that didn't seem real but in that moment I believed it. I believed it and I didn't know why. Her dark chocolate hair waved through the crowds and she always seemed to look back to me to make sure I was still there even though she had me by her hand. Soon we came into a quiet alleyway and that's when I stopped. Her soft breath wafted through her in little clouds as she turned to me.
"Why did you pick me?" I asked softly, her eyes turning to me and she smiled.
"Because you were the only one that looked to me" She said quietly, her small hand pulling away from my hand, immediately I missed her warmth. "Why have you brought me here then?" I questioned her again, she looked away and pointed the end of the alleyway, shining lights bursting with color. "We aren't there yet" She said turning to me, beginning to walk again. I stepped once then again before grabbing her hand once more and she almost stopped but kept going with my hand in hers.We walked quietly, the silence didn't seem as overbearing as it did before with her around. We arrived at the bridge, over the stone fence was a vast river with trees and small buildings on the other side. She breathed softly and grabbed the stone fence "Over there," She pointed "Is too quiet" She whispered. I looked to her and then to the place she pointed to "Where are the lights?" I said softly, my eyes scanning the sky for the lights she pointed to. She laughed softly, just for a moment and looked at me "You're not looking right" She mumbled, grabbing my chin and facing it to the dark river. I saw the sparkling reflection and the colors everywhere.
They seemed to run and stop, moving then taking a breath. My hand reached to them and they stared to it. I let out a shocked breath then a laugh and I smiled for what seemed like forever. I picked up a pebble and through it in, the river dancing around and then it was gone. I looked up to the city across and saw that's where the lights were coming from, I just didn't seem them before. The river had watered them down and made them less bright. I let a soft laugh and I stared at them "They're beautiful" I mumbled, not waiting for her response. After what seemed like ages, I escaped the trance of staring into the lights. The blues and the reds, the yellows and the meshed purples and pinks. The lights that danced off the trees and rippled into the water down below seemed like a ballerina in movement.
But when I turned to her, she was gone. She had disappeared. I didn't hear her leave, nor did I want her to. I looked all around but saw nothing. I then turned to the city across and saw a white bridge, waiting for me to cross. I stepped closer to it and closer, climbing over the stone and onto the Rocky beach. My shoes running into the water and going deeper and deeper into the water. My body felt heavy, I couldn't swim. I knew how but why can't I swim. I grab at nothing, heavy. I feel heavy. The water moving against my eyes and that bridge across seemed to only get farther.
Why am I here. I wonder. Where did she go? I wonder. Why can't I get to it. I wonder. The water only got deeper and deeper and I felt my hands become filled with dark oil. I cry out seeing the river wasn't just water. I cry our for help. I cry out for her. I cry out to a god with no name.
No one came.
I slip underneath the waters current and I swallow the water. I cry, but only bubbles come out of my mouth. I drift deeper and deeper into the water, the top only getting farther and farther. Only darker and darker. The lights from above seemed to shine down on me and I smiled softly at it, reaching towards to it. My hand waving gently as the water ate me alive, the darkness only getting larger. I finally close my eyes, becoming at peace with it.
And then I'm awake again.
