After y/n set up her computer and it's assets, she resumed where she left off with the mash up she was working on. Kimmy Jen sat in her desk across the room, playing with the beads hanging from a lamp she had brought.

Both of the girls' activities were interrupted by a knock at the door.

"It's the campus police! Hide your booze!" said the voice behind the door before it opened.

Y/n's dad, David, popped his head in through the doorway and laughed before walking in.

"Ha ha, just your old man making a funny," he said.

Y/n was not amused.

"Chris Rock, everybody," she replied sarcastically as she turned back to her computer.

He nodded awkwardly, then noticed Kimmy Jen.

"Hey, you must be y/n's roommate! I'm Dr. Harbour, y/n's dad. I teach Comparative Literature here," he said.  She gave no response. She held eye contact for a few seconds then turned back to her lamp.

His eyebrows drew together, rather confused, before turning his attention back to y/n.

"So when did you get here? How did you get here?" He said, putting his hands in the pockets of his suit.

"I took a cab. Didn't wanna inconvenience you and Winona," y/n replied. Winona was y/n's step mother that she wasn't exactly fond of. "How is the step-monster?"

Her dad raised his eyebrows in surprised. "She's fine, thank you for asking. She's actually in Vegas at a conference-"

"Oh, no dad I don't really care," y/n cut in. "I just wanted to say step-monster. " Her dad sighed.

"So, uh, have you guys been out on the quad yet?" He asked, walking towards the window. "It's springtime, all the students study on the grass."

"I don't wanna study on the grass, dad." Y/n opened a box and took out a jumble of chords. "I need to move to LA and get a job at a record label and start paying my dues."

"Here we go again," he said, rolling his eyes. "You know y/n, DJing is a hobby. It's not a career, unless you're someone like P Diddy or-"

"Ugh!" Y/n groaned, obviously annoyed. "I wanna produce music! I wanna make music, dad."

"But you're going to get a college education first! For free, I might add. End of story."

Kimmy Jen turned around in her swivel chair to face y/n and she spoke for the first time since they had met.

"I'm going to the activities fair," she stated blankly, standing up from the chair and walking toward the door.

Y/n seized the opportunity to get out of this conversation with her father.

"Me, too!" she interjected as she began to follow. Her dad opened his mouth to say something, but y/n didn't give him the chance. "I'm going to the activities fair with my super good friend, Kimmy Jen."

The two girls walked out the door, leaving Dr. Harbour standing alone in the middle of the plain room.
