"Hey! Bree and Mellie! Mr. Davenport just invented this AWESOME mind reading device." Adam says, bursting open the door. We aren't even half way through the Breakfast Club.
"That's cool!" I say. Bree rolls her eyes. "Come on, Bree. That's really cool."
"I guess. Come on, let's go check it out." We run downstairs.
"Hey Bree! Look me in the eye!" Leo says, wearing some kind of thing on his head.
"Why?" She says, doing it.
"Hey, don't call me immature and stupid!" Leo says.
"I wasn't. I was thinking of Adam. Doing that." She says, pointing to Adam, who's trying to balance a chocolate chip cookie on his nose.
"Oh. I understand."
"Here, let me try." Chase says, grabbing the thing off Leo's head. He puts it on his head and looks at me. Oh no, looking the person in the eye must allow it to work. I look at the floor. Must. Not. Look. Chase. In. The. Eye. But I can't help it. I look up at him. I have to think of anything but him. Cheeseburgers. Algebra. Justin Bieber. Eww, Justin Bieber. Watermelon. Chase. Chase. Chase......
"Hmm." Chase says, taking off the thing and blushing. Oh god. He saw my thoughts. "Here, Mellie, you try." I put it on my head. It's cold and metally. I look at Bree. She laughs. No she doesn't. Her voice in my head does. No, it's rattling around this metal dome on my head.
"Wow, Chase REALLY likes you." She thinks.
"No he doesn't!" I think. Or at least I think I think. I realize I actually said it. I look at Chase, who blushes. I imagine he knows what I am talking about. I look Chase in the eye. I see a picture in my head. It's a girl. She had horrible brown hair and dark blue eyes. I see some faint dark circles under her eyes, probably from too much studying and not enough sleeping. I realize who it is. It's me. I take off the thing and hand it to Bree. "Wow, that's...cool." I say. She puts it down on the counter.
"I don't want to read people's minds." She says, laughing. She looks from me to Chase. "HMMM. I have a sudden hankering for something from upstairs which isn't down here, don't you also, Leo, Mr. D and Adam?" Bree says in a weird voice, giving them a look.
Leo and Mr. Davenport give her a confused look. Then Mr. Davenport shouts, "Oh, yeah! Come on, Leo. Lets go upstairs." They run upstairs.
Bree looks at Adam. "Adam." She hisses.
"What? I don't need anything."
"Yes you do."
"No, no. I don't."
"ADAM!" She growls, dragging him away. I follow. "No, you stay here, Mellie." She winks. I turn to Chase, since we are the only ones left down here.
"Umm....." I say, feeling my cheeks heat up.
"Ummm...." Chase says, blushing as well.
"CHASE! Weren't you going to ask her out? Don't just stand there looking stupid! Oh, wait. You can't help it." I turn around to see Eddie is talking on his screen.
"Eddie!" Chase says, blushing again. He turns around and sits down, facing away from me. I sit down next to him.
"Hey, Chase....don't be embarrassed." I say.
"Who? What? Whaaaaa? I never-I'm not...embarrassed. Whaat?" I reach over to him and take his hand.
"If Eddie was right....and....you might have really wanted to....you know.....go on a date or something....I might....possibly....say....yes." I say.
"Yeah, I totally understand you don't want to go on a date. You wanna stay friends. Yeah, okay, that's perfectly fine with...WHAT?" He jumps out of his seat and I burst out laughing. I stand up too.
"Yeah, I guess that's me saying that I like you too." I say.
"Cool." He says, smiling.
"Cool." I say back, then pull him into a hug. He slowly wraps his arms around me, finishing the hug.
