Waving off my little sister happily, I turned back around and continued to wrestle with the junk that demanded freedom from my locker - this would take a while.
Once Avril had disappeared, I could feel Lexi breathing down my neck with a smile plastered across her face and so I turned the other way. Stomping her feet angrily, she rushed round to the other side of me and stood where Avril once did.
Staring at me grumpily, she then began to grin again. It was starting to creep me out.
"So... Where were you last night?" she asked, excitedly, looping a strand of hair around her finger.
Rolling my eyes, I tried to ignore her as best I could. She cleared her throat a few times before I caved.
"And why is that any of your business?" I snapped, halfheartedly.
"Because it says so in the handbook of girl code." she began, clearing her throat once more. "Rule #456: A girl must always tell her best friend, and slash or room mate, everything."
"Wow! They have that many rules?" I joked, looking across at her with a shocked expression. Folding her arms across her chest, she looked at me disapprovingly. "And anyway, who says you're my best friend?!"
Pain in her eyes, she hugged her chest sadly. "I-I can't believe you'd say such a thing." she stuttered, looking down at the floor with tears forming in her eyes.
"Oh stop it. You know I hate that fake act you pull." I groaned, not even looking at her to know what an idiot she was being. Laughter erupted from her as she nudged into me playfully. "And let's be clear; I'm, by far, the best actress here."
Chuckling away, she then looked across at me cheekily. "Yeah. I guess so. I mean, you almost got the lead last year."
"Hey! That girl paid her way into first place. That wasn't my fault!" I argued dramatically, slamming my locker door shut. I'll admit, the reality of the joke hurt a little.
"Yeah, I guess so. Still, I heard the cast members were still scrubbing off that body paint for weeks." she smirked, peering at her glossy nails painted a bright sapphire blue. Laughter jumped out of my throat as I recalled my prank, and so I leant against my locker to regain balance.
"Oh my god." I began, trying to speak between stomach stitches. The memories of switching the body paint for hair dye came flashing back to me. "I totally forgot I did that. This is why you're my best friend."
"So you admit it? I'm your very best friend?" she asked, holding her hands together and resting them on her chin pleadingly. She was certainly trying it today.
"I suddenly cannot hear." I stated as I walked away from her neutrally. Hearing her panic behind me, I began to chuckle to myself as I headed for class.
"Hey! Hey, wait up!" she called, jumping up and down. "We've got first and second together!"
I didn't stop. It was more amusing to hear her petrified footsteps rushing after me.
