The sounds of Nate's fists bashing against the wide glass window that looked out onto the field rung through the cafeteria, and everyone had began to look around from him to Mae. Whilst they hadn't made things official, almost everyone knew that something was going on between the two of them. Mae's cheeks began to turn a faint red as she furrowed her eyebrows in disgust.

"Be right back." she choked, worry lining her pouted lips, as she fumbled around putting everything in her bag.

Standing up quickly, she lugged her backpack over her shoulder and rushed outside, mumbling something inaudible - but of course, it could only be some form of insult towards the buffoon on the other side of the glass.

For a moment he smirked, taking his hands away from the window and placing them in his back pockets, merely avoiding an expulsion. It was as if he believed he had won - but as I remembered the look Mae gave me as she left the room, it could only mean one thing.

Within seconds, Mae had appeared. Dancing around on her tip-toes frantically, she waved her hands in his face whilst she was yelling.

Finishing her sentence, Mae exhaled and looked across at Nate. Then, he nudged her, a little too hard to be labelled as playful — though it wasn't unusual for him to get physical during an argument. That fact only made me more happier that Mae was finally done with him. For months, Mae had to deal with the stalking, the disturbances in the halls and the back-chat from that monster and quite frankly, I was sick of it.

"Ugh. What does she see in that guy?" asked Yaz as she nosily clutched the back of the chair and peered across at them both.

"Just because she's talking to Nate, doesn't mean she's talking with him." I snapped back. I hated the opinionated drivel that they spewed at every waking moment and whether they were looking out for Mae or not, they were still being rude.

"Yeah, yeah, sure. Plus, he's not even the issue here." Hanna remarked, causing me to raise an eyebrow. Him... not the issue? "Mae's problem is that she talks to all of the guys."

"Seriously?!" It was hard not to fly across the table and so I folded my arms and took a deep breath. "You're supposed to be her friends. Stop being so bitchy about her when she's not even here to defend herself!"

Leaning forward, she eyed me up and down. "I'm not being bitchy. I'm just being honest."

Scoffing aloud, I simply rolled my eyes. She was hopeless.

"What?! I am!" she answered, now arguing with herself. "Yaz, am I being bitchy?!"

"Actually, you are being bitchy." replied Yaz, a little shaken. She hardly ever stood up against Hanna and so I knew that Yaz must know something I didn't.

"That's just the puff talking! Look at your eyes!" Hanna pointed, almost poking one of her eyes out. Yaz flapped her hand at Hanna, trying to get her away.

"Mae can talk to whoever she wants. We shouldn't slut-shame her." Yaz argued, folding her arms. "And plus, look, she just slapped him!"

Pointing her stubby pale finger towards the window, we all peered across at Nate who was holding his cheek in disgust. Mae still had her hand raised, shocked at herself for finally retaliating to his toxic ways.

I gasped, slightly - taken aback by what I had just witnessed. Mae had a temper but she would never raise her hand to anyone. And then I remembered the conversation we were having.

"So maybe take your head out of your backside before talking rubbish about our friend." I answered confidently, as Mae disappeared from my eye line.

Hanna was furious and she let me know that by standing up, all too quickly. "Whatever. I'm going to the vending machines."

"Feeling hangry, are we?" I sassed, knowing that Hanna was already at her limit. I wasn't usually the type to bitch at people, but being around Hanna seemed to bring out the worst in me. Plus, she deserved it.

"You'd do well to watch yourself, Diss." she threatened as I smirked. Her threats were empty and I had no interest in paying mind to them. "Yaz!" she screeched, her voice piercing our ears. Yaz, jumping to her feet like a solider, shivered slightly.

"I'm going, I'm going." she said, grabbing her stuff and running away quickly.

"Your bad habits will catch up to you." I said, as she turned to walk away.

"Go swivel you little-" she began, but suddenly gave up. "Whatever." she called back as she disappeared into the crowd of hungry teens. One point to me, Hanna; nil.

"Where did they disappear off to?" asked a familiar voice as she sniffled and sat down. Mae looked like a wreck and I knew not to ask her about it just yet. Pausing for a moment, she looked up into the air vaguely before continuing. "Wait, why do I care?"

We both irrupted into laughter then, as there was no stronger bond than two people who hated the same person.
