-A thousand... years?, I questioned.
-At least.
-How does that make sense?
Kou looked troubled. He kept playing with his beard, until he came to a conclusion.
-It does not. I must be reading it wrong.
Kou still had the troubled look on his face.
-You must be. Its impossible to have a magic from so long ago stuck on me.
-It may be an old seal which has been preserved, and been transferred to you somehow., Kou speculated.
-That sounds more plausible.

He stood up, walked up to the window and continued stroking his beard.
-I will be going to Morry' s place. This is a lot to think about alone, even for me. I want to help you, as my dream is to continue curing those passing by in the best of my ability. Just like Julie did, even if I am nowhere as powerful as her. And as my first guest, I can't give up on you so soon.

-Thanks, Sir. Kou. I will gladly help out any way I can as long as Im staying here!
-Cut the "Sir", he smiled. His eyes were softer than usual, and his face relaxed. He went through the kitchen door. I stood up, and followed.
-So, shat should I do?, I asked.
-Do you feel like walking? How is your body keeping up?
-Hmm...
I tried moving my leg. The stick made it feel numb, and the painkilling medicine had worn off.

-If I go take more medicine, I think Ill manage.
-No, just stay here. Keep watch on the house. I wont take more than an hour or two.
-Oh, okay., I nodded, and looked out at the sun, which was reaching the trees in the distance, on its way down. The orange glow of the horizon shone beautifully through the old window glass.
-Hey, boy.
-Yes, Kou?
-If you are going to stay here, you could try learning something useful while you're at it.

-What do you mean?, I asked while Kou put on his pointy, black shoes and fur jacket.
-Here., he explained and reached me a thick, heavy book from a shelf by the kitchen door.
The book was titled "Magic: Foundational arcane theory", in small letters on the front. The cover was made of brown, soft leather, and I noticed the pages were ridiculously thin when I turned some pages.
-Is this...?, I started with a growing smile on my face.
-Knowledge is power. Next time you meet beings from the other world, this may prove useful. I trust you to never misuse it, though., he explained firmly.

-This is probably the coolest book Ive ever held! Ill be sure to read up!, I smiled brightly.
-You don't need to read further than page seven for today though.
-Why?, I wondered.
-Don't rush it., he said, flat and cold.
I nodded twice slightly intimidated and settled down by the kitchen table, on one of the four chairs, the one closest to the oven and the small window, not the bench.

-I will be leaving then!, take care.
-Wait... uh, will the ogre come back?, I asked.
-Not a chance on a sunny day like this. The spirit fears the light, like we fear the dark. Besides, I wonder if it survived the collapse. The mountainside was unrecognizable, you know. Its a wonder you got out of it alive., Kou said from the hall.

I was reminded of what Kou had said. About the possibility of being trapped in a cycle of repetitive memory loss. The thought scared me, but I knew there was nothing I could do with the seal, unless I could do what was impossible for Kou.

-Good to know then. See you!, I shouted back from the kitchen.
When I heard the front door close, I swiftly turned the first page. It once again stood "Magic: Foundational arcane theory", but in less fancy writing. It was all hand- written. The pages where brown on the sides, and had a few scratches here and there. I turned to the table of contents, which covered two pages in compact, tiny writing, and describing 1051 pages. "Introduction", page 4. "Basic concept", page 6. "Understanding arcane energy", page 7.
