Recommended by (again) one of my favorite writers EchoAllison (it still wont let me tag her so search her name) Go check out her outstanding stories. This takes place after 2x18 after Jughead said "Betty," And ran towards the stage.
Jughead's POV:
I gasp with horror. The message written in blood on the wall is clear. The black hood is back. And he's coming for us. All of us. The audience starts to freak out. But the only thing I can think of is Betty. The black hood was back there at some point, stabbing midge to death. And Betty was backstage too. I shove my camera into Kevin who bolts away, screaming and running from the chaos. Amongst all that was going on, I notice Chic sitting in his seat perfectly calm. He wasn't moving at all. He didn't even look phased. I decide to ignore him and focus on Betty.
I run up the stage looking everywhere, "Betty! Betty!" But I can't seem to find her. I was running around everywhere, trying to look for her. I started to freak out. She was no where to be seen. I yell her name a million times and search everywhere. I was being pushed around by the the screaming people and couldn't get anywhere. And then I saw her. All of our friends were running past her, trying to escape, trying to save their lives that are likely in danger. She's staring up at Midge's body. The blood on the wall, the scissors and wooden steaks impaired into her.
For a moment I forget all about Betty. Only a moment. And at that moment, I thought of Midge. Here she was, playing the lead in the school play, excited, happy, nervous. And I bet her parents were in the audience, ready to see their amazing daughter perform, only to be greeted with her dead body up on the wall. No one could've expected this. Not one person.
The moment ends quickly as I rush over to Betty, "Betts, we've gotta get out of here." But she doesn't respond. I shake her shoulders, "Betty, we need to go, now!" No response.
I follow her eyes up to the message on the board, "All those who escaped me before will die"
Before I can say anything she responds, "It's my fault." Her voice is barely a whisper.
My heart sinks, "No, no, Betty, it's not. We thought the janitor was the black hood, we couldn't have expected this. Betty, we need to leave." I pry.
"I did this... I inspired him... I'm the reason she's dead," Tears come to Betty's eyes.
But I have to get her out of this place. It's not safe. So I wrap my arm around her and pull her out the back door, away from everyone else. Screams for help were still in the air. The sickening smell of death was haunting me to the bone.
I run around the building to my motorcycle. "Come on, Betty," I drag her along but she seems to be lost. Her face is blank, no emotions present. Her hands are cold and shaking, her eyes are stuck looking into nothing. "Betty!" I snap my fingers in front of her face. Still nothing. She's in shock. I sit on my motorcycle, grab her hand and get her on too. I put the helmet on her and Betty wraps her arms around me tight. I drive her home, but I still don't think she's okay.
"Betts, can you please say something? Please?" Nothing, "I promise, Midge's death wasn't your fault at all. This is the doing of the sick, messed up black hood, okay?" I say as we stand up off the bike.
Betty locks her big doe eyes with mine. They're coated in tears and I see her start to tremble. She puts her hands over her mouth and turns away. "Oh my God, it's my fault. It's my fault, it's my fault. She's dead..., because of me. Because I inspired him," Betty rants, tears coming out of her eyes now.
I step towards her and wrap my arms tightly around her. "Shh, shh, Betts. Calm down, it's okay." She cries in my arms, "It's okay," I whisper in her ear. "None of this is because of you, and don't you dare ever think that it is."
"But I-" Betts starts to say.
"No. No arguments. This isn't because of you." I sigh loudly and put my hand on my forehead. "What?" Her voice sounds small.
"I'm just glad you're okay... I'm so glad you're safe." I say, emotion running through my voice. "If something like that ever happens again, you come find me right away, okay? I can't risk you getting hurt."
Betty cups my face, tears still running down her cheeks, "Okay." She pulls me in for a soft kiss, "I love you, Jughead." She whispers, her forehead against mine.
"I love you too," Just as I say that her mom pulls up. "I think I need to go, and you need some rest. It was a crazy day." She takes a deep breath in and looks away from me, trying not to cry. "Betts," I turn her face back towards mine, "It's okay. Let it out."
Then she really starts to cry. Sobbing into my shirt, gripping onto me.
"Elizabeth!" I hear Alice yell. She stops when she notices the moment we're having.
Betty pulls away, trying to calm her cries, "I'll be okay, Jughead. I need to talk to my mom, you can go."
"Okay. I'll call you in the morning, good night." I whispered, kissing her one last time.
"Good night, and be careful please," Betty responds into my lips. She's still crying. It hits me again, that Midge is dead. One of Betty's friends, someone who we all knew. Now, things have changed. She's dead. Gone. Because of the black hood. I personally didn't know her that well, but we were all mourning. We were mourning and scared.
"Okay. Call me if you start to freak out again, alright? I'll always be here for you." I say to Betty.
She blinks and a few more tears slip out, "Yeah, I will." I wipe them away with a small smile, trying to make her feel better.
I start to walk away before I stop, "Oh, and Betty?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry how this night ended and for how you feel."
Betty wipes away her tears, "Me too, Juggie. Me too."
And so the night ended swiftly. Chaos still eating its way through town. Everyone was shaken up from that night. No one was left unaffected. But for the girl next door, she was one of the most shaken up. But I could be there for her. I could be the one to help her through this. I will do everything in my power to help Betty, no matter what it takes.
