Chapter 9

"I don't know who to ask to the ball." Glen complained that night as we all sat down in front of the television.

It was Friday night and that meant that it was movie night for us. We all gathered around the TV, sprawled everywhere. Actually, the guys were sprawled all over the place like the only way guys can. I was sitting on the love seat, chewing on a Snickers bar, while the guys were debating over the movie. Again. I sighed inwardly and couldn't help that Dane was sneaking glances at me. What is up with this guy? It was like he was trying to ignore one day, and showing interest the next. Is had diagnose with a bad case of bipolarity or something? But I couldn't help flushing when he does that.

"Maybe you should ask your ex, Jesse," Jay suggested to Glen.

"Eh, she found another guy," Glen answered, his face was crestfallen.

I nearly laughed but controlled it when I saw Glen glaring at me.

"Hey, you guys get to go to town tomorrow so find some chicks dumb enough to fall for you there," I joked.

"Thanks for the support," Heath snapped and I chuckled.

"Hey, Dane, who are you asking to go to the ball?" Lance asked him and I whipped my head to look at Dane.

He met my gaze for a second before turning away and shrugging, "I don't know. My parents want me to invite the daughter of their friends."

Envy shot through me like a bullet, hard and fast.

"I'm tired, I'm going to bed," Dane said before escaping a two seconds later.

I sighed and said, "I'm going to go study for my test."

They guys exchanged weird looks but I shrugged it off and walk to my room. It was light outside, and I fell onto my bed with a heavy sighed. Of all the guys I could of fallen for and dated, I had to fall for the mysterious, brooding, silent, hot guy that I live with. And about what he said about asking his parent's friend's daughter. Was that his girlfriend? Ex-girlfriend? I know I have no right to be jealous but right now, I feel like I can crush that chick with regretting it. A knock on my door stopped my anger.

I opened it to see Dane standing there with his hands in his pockets.

"What's up?" I asked him, keeping my face cool and collected.

"Listen, Lexi. About that kiss..." he was about to finish his sentence but I put my palms up.

"If you're telling me the kiss was a mistake, then let me assure you that the kiss was forgotten," I said, trying really hard to keep the hurt from my voice.

"I mean, I know you probably have a girlfriend or something, so no worries," I babbled. Somewhere in my mind, I'm telling myself to shut up.

"Lexi, listen to me," he shook my shoulders to shut me up and I looked at him warily.

He sighed, "Lexi, I don't have a choice here okay? My life is freaking screwed up with my parents trying to dictate my life every single damn second. I can't have a relationship with you because they already have set a girlfriend for me."

"And your parents want you to invite her to the Winter Solstice Ball and date her?" I asked, weary and sad.

He nodded stiffly, "Either I do what they say, or I will have nothing left."

"Why did you kiss me?" I asked, curious for the answer that will probably break my heart into cold pieces.

"I'm sorry. It was a mistake."

I looked at him for a long moment, "You're wrong."

Dane grabbed my shoulders once more and shook it, "Lexi, how can you not understand that I don't have a choice here? I never had a choice!"

I shook him off and stepped back, heart broken and damage, but said slowly, "Everyone has a choice, Dane. You just refuse to see it."

With that, I closed the door on Dane and everything that involves the beat of my heart.
