The Experiment

"Erwin? It's Hanji and Levi.", said an excited voice from behind the door of Commander Erwin Smith's office.
"Right. Come in.", replied Erwin.
The door opened to reveal Squad Leader Hanji and Lance Corporal Levi.
"You asked to see us Erwin?", asked Levi impatiently.
"I have an experiment that I need  both of you to oversee.", said Erwin.
Hanji squealed and jumped up and down from excitement, while Levi stared at Erwin incredulously.
"I thought that was Hanji's job.", said Levi.
"Usually, it is.", said Erwin. "But for this particular experiment, your expertise will be necessary."
"What exactly is this 'experiment'?", said Levi.
"It revolves around the new cadet, Sakura Pierce. I need you and Hanji to plan out a series of 'tests' to determine Sakura's strengths, and maybe try to find a few weaknesses. According to what we saw during the trial, she might be even quicker and more agile than you, Levi."
"Tch. Not a chance. Stronger than me? I could knock her out with a single blow.", replied Levi.
"Alright then, it's settled! That'll be the first test. Tomorrow, during sparring practice, you, Levi, will be her partner. Let's see you knock her down.", said Erwin with a smirk.
Hanji jumped up and down excitedly as Levi gritted his teeth, glaring at Erwin.

The next morning, Levi got up earlier than usual. He had an early breakfast in the mess hall and then went on a run to warm up for the task ahead.
He might be facing an opponent he can't defeat.
"That brat can't beat me in hand-to-hand combat. There's absolutely no way... but... she is quite strong... she's also muscular in all the right places and... those huge eyes... NO... stop it Levi... she's just a cadet... an arrogant brat that needs to be put in her place.", thought Levi.
Levi walked to the sparring practice area. Despite waking up early, he was 5 minutes late.
"Pierce! Your partner's here!", yelled Kieth upon seeing Levi.
Sakura looked up to see Levi approaching her.
"My name is Lance Corporal Levi. I will be your  sparring partner for today", said Levi to Sakura. He then got closer to her and whispered menacingly in her ear, "You might think you're quicker and stronger than everyone else. But today, I'll show you just how wrong you are."
Sakura gave Levi a bone chilling look that made him shiver internally.
"She's a bit scary", he thought. "But she'll be scared of me when I beat her and put her in her place."
Levi got into his fighting stance, while Sakura stood there motionless, looking bored.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and stood around the two, forming a circle around them.
"Who is that?"
"She's so beautiful"
"She's even shorter than Corporal Levi!"
"Does she even know how to fight?"
"She must be crazy if she thinks she can beat Corporal Levi"
On and on went the string of comments and questions about Sakura. Everyone was intrigued by her courage. Could she really beat humanity's strongest soldier?
Levi lunged at Sakura with incredible speed, aiming for her stomach. But Sakura was even faster. She swung her leg under him, causing him to fall to the ground. Enraged, Levi quickly got up and swung his fist. Sakura blocked his punch and punched him in the stomach, hard. She tripped him again and he fell to the ground. She then sat on his back and grabbed one of his hands, pulling it all the way over his shoulder until she saw him wince. She then let go of his arm, leaving him on the ground. She got up, dusted herself off, and looked straight at Erwin. Levi was drenched in his own sweat and breathing heavily, while Sakura didn't even look tired.
She turned around and glanced at Levi, offering him her hand to help him stand up. Levi violently slapped her hand away and got up on his own. He looked around and saw everyone staring at him. He dismissed them by waving his hands and saying: " Ok, show's over. Get back to work!"
Levi marched past Sakura and was heading to his dormitory when Erwin stopped him by placing his hand on Levi's shoulder. "Levi, it happens..."
"Let go of me Erwin", snapped Levi.
"Levi!", yelled Erwin. "This has nothing to do with how strong you are. This isn't about you. This is about finally freeing mankind. Didn't you see how powerful she is? With both of your strengths combined, we could be getting one step closer to finally defeating the titans!"
Levi stared into Erwin's eyes; steely gray into sky blue.
"The second test will take place this afternoon, when she shows us how good she is at using 3DMG and killing titans.", said Erwin. "I expect you to be there Levi. The both of you must learn to cooperate for the sake of the greater good. Understood?"
"Yes, Commander Smith", replied Levi.
