Lucas went back to New York with his friends, all of them hoping that something there might jog his memory. But so far nothing did.. He didn't remember the subway or Topanga's or the school. They were all getting bummed out because they thought that nothing would jog it.
Suddenly, Zay got an idea.
They were in Mr. Matthews' class trying to get him to remember without pushing him too hard when Zay decided to go get his yearbook out of his locker. He was actually glad now that he always forgot to take it home.
He rushed back to the room and gave it to Lucas to look through.
Lucas turned every page with the same confused expression that had taken over his face in Texas and was present ever since. After a few pages the look changed to one of recognition and wonder.
"Did it work?" Zay asked excitedly. "Do you remember anything? Anything at all?"
Lucas stared at the page for a minute then he looked up at Maya. "I remember fire. Us, we're like fire, I remember someone said that because of this.." He turned the book so she could see the page. "We were voted favorite couple. Why?"
Maya blinked. "I don't know. It was a mistake. We were never a couple. You only dated Riley."
"We were like a summer rain." Riley piped up smiling at him.
He didn't look at her, he just kept looking at Maya. "But we were like fire. What does that mean?"
Maya shrugged. "Ask Sarah. I didn't say that, she did."
Lucas nodded. "Okay. Who is this Sarah and where can I find her?"
Zay bolted out of the room and returned a moment later tugging a brunette girl who looked a bit like Maya behind him. "Sarah."
Sarah nodded. "Yeah, that's me, why did you drag me in here?"
"I need to ask you, Sarah, why did you say that Maya and I are like fire. I remember that being said, but I don't remember why."
Sarah shrugged. "Oh, because you guys are both hotheaded and burn bright, especially around each other, like a fire. You know you guys get all fired up."
"Why were we voted favorite couple if we have never dated?"
Sarah shrugged again. "I don't know, cuz you guys are cute. You guys flirt like all the time and everyone can tell you really like each other. You make it obvious."
"But why have we never dated?"
"Honestly, because of the girl sitting beside you." Sarah pointed to Riley. "Maya's best friend. Everyone knows that Maya would never do anything to upset Riley and dating you while Riley is crushing on you would upset her, obviously, plus you dated Riley first so Maya wouldn't go there, she should in my opinion, but she won't. Did that help?"
Lucas nodded. "Yes, I'm a little less confused. Thank you."
"Anytime. Get well soon." Sarah said then she left the room.
Lucas looked at Maya and Maya looked at Lucas. He smiled, but she looked away. He frowned.
"Maya, I-"
"You guys should show him the gym. I'm gonna go get a snack." Maya said before she walked out.
Riley sighed, glanced up at Lucas, then she stood to follow Maya.
