' the end is just the beginning '
"SAY HI TO AUNTIE NAT." The voice of Laura Barton could be heard through the phone the redhead held in her head. The baby in the brunette's arms gurgled, a smile on his face."Fat." Natasha Romanoff said as she stared at the baby boy that was named after her and her ex-teammate. Nathaniel Ellie Barton. Hearing footsteps, Natasha bid her best friend's family goodbye before turning around, slipping her phone into her pocket.
"One of our tech boys flagged this, splashed down in the Banda Sea." Nick Fury said as he entered the room. "Could be the Quinjet. But with Stark's stealth tech, we still can't track the damn thing."
"Right." Natasha nodded.
"Probably jumped out and swam to Fiji. He'll send a postcard." Nick said as they walked out of the room.
"'Wish you were here.'" She read. "You sent me to recruit him, way back when. Did you know then what was going to happen?" She asked, glancing at her boss, well, ex-boss.
"You never know." Nick shrugged. "You hope for the best and make do with what you get. I got a great team."
"Nothing lasts forever."
"Trouble, Miss Romanoff." Fury shot back, calmly. "No matter who wins or loses, trouble still comes around." Natasha sighed and walked off somewhere else.
"The rules have changed." Came the voice of Steve Rogers from outside as he walked with Tony Stark by his side and even though they never admitted it, the two were best friends. Thor stood by them, slowing down for their small strides.
"We're dealing with something new." Tony finished off.
"Well, The Vision's artificial intelligence."
"A machine."
"So it doesn't count," Steve said, retorting back.
"It's not like a person lifting the hammer," Tony said as he slipped on his sunglasses.
"Right." Steve sighed. "Different rules for us."
"Nice guy." Tony continued, the two talking about Vision. "But artificial."
"Thank you," Steve exclaimed, sighing as he ran a hand through his golden locks.
"If he can wield the hammer, he can keep the Mind Stone," Thor spoke, his voice deep and mighty. "It's safe with the Vision and these days, safe is in short supply."
"But if you put the hammer in an elevator..." Steve trailed off.
"It would still go up." Tony finished, a small grin tugging at his lips.
"Elevator's not worthy." The three chuckled, shaking off their stress and anxiety that lingered in the back of their heads.
"I'm going to miss these little talks of ours." The god of thunder spoke as he patted Tony on the shoulder.
"Well, not if you don't leave," Tony said, implying the idea of Thor staying with the team.
"I have no choice." Thor sighed as they continued walking, exiting the new Avengers facility. "The Mind Stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the last few years. That's not a coincidence. Someone has been playing an intricate game and has made pawns of us. But once all these pieces are in a position..."
"Triple Yahtzee?" Tony questioned, slipping on his sunglasses.
"You think you can find out what's coming?" Steve asked, the two blondes ignoring the older man.
"I do." He spoke. Thor patted Tony on the stomach before walking further. "Besides this one, there's nothing that can't be explained." He holds up his hammer and is brought back to Asgard which burnt the grass he was just standing on.
"That man has no regard for lawn maintenance," Tony said as he glanced down at the brunt grass. "I'm gonna miss him though." The two best friends turned on their heels, walking down the lawn. "And you're gonna miss me. There's gonna be a lot of manful tears." Tony pressed a button on his car key which makes his car drive over by itself as they walk over towards Stark's car.
"I will miss you, Tony," Steve said, truthfully.
"Yeah? Well, it's time for me to tap out. Maybe I should take a page out of Barton's book and build Pepper a farm, hope nobody blows it up."
"The simple life." The blonde sighed, hands dig into his pockets.
"You'll get there one day," Tony said, flashing him a sympathetic smile.
"I don't know, family, stability. The guy who wanted all that went in the ice seventy-five years ago. I think someone else came out." Tony makes a move to get into his car, turning his body towards Steve.
"You alright." Steve lets out a sigh, glancing at the building that stood in front of them with proudness.
"I'm home." Steve walks back into the building and finds Natasha standing by herself in a room. "You want to keep staring at the wall, or do you want to go to work? I mean, it's a pretty interesting wall."
"I thought you and Tony were still gazing into each other's eyes." Steve chuckled softly. "How do we look?"
"Well, we're not the '27 Yankees." The blonde handed Natasha a tablet.
"We've got some hitters." She hummed as she glanced at the tablet.
"They're good. They're not a team." He realised as he stared at the profiles of the people that sat on the tablet.
"Let's beat 'em into shape." Natasha and Steve walk into a room where five people stood in their suits. Rhodes in his war machine suit, San in his Flacon suit, Vision in his gold cape and, finally, both Wanda and Pietro in their own custom made outfits.
"Avengers...!" Steve yelled as he stared at each member carefully, eyes stern yet soft.
A soft and husky voice footed across the room, unbearable by the human ear. The source of the voice came from the window ledge where a dark-haired witch sat, invisible to those that stood below. A Cheshire like grin spread across her face as her eyes twinkled with mischief.
"Assemble."
