The end of the beginning - Part 3

Darkness was falling. My time was near. But I had some business to take care of first - " Boys lights out! Lorelei get into bed before you wake up your sisters." Dear god to say the 7-year-old was difficult - was an understatement.  As I hear the thudding of Lorelei's feet as she scurries into her room and hopefully in her bed, I start the mundane task of tidying up the kitchen since everyone decided it would a brilliant idea to have a food fight. Note to self: Don't forget to put darks wash on and check the garage to make sure he hasn't died yet. Arrgg - how I loathe him!

As I was putting the last of the dark wash in the tumble-dryer my phone started to ring, closing the machine door I looked at the caller I.D. and saw it was my boss Henry. I answered.

"Hey, Henry what's up?" I ask already guessing the answer.

"Hey, Averna. Sorry to call you so late I just thought that you might want to know that he's here and has just been cut off by all the bartenders." I heaved a sigh at hearing this and replied the usual saying I'd be there in no later than 30 minutes.

Just as I've hung up and put the phone down, I hear the front door unlock, open, close and lock again. Knowing it would be my mate and our pup I feel myself relax a little in their presence. I turn around to push the start button on the washing machine and just as I step away I feel strong, muscled arms wrap around my waist pulling me back to meet a solid chest and soon I feel my mate running his nose along my neck. Turning around I wrap my arms around the back of his neck and leaned up to be met partway by his firm lips on mine, but before the kiss could deepen we were interrupted by the small whimper of our son. 

Turning to face the small child in his car seat, I can't help but smile looking at my son who is almost identical to his father, with his dirty blonde hair and full pink lips and I'm sure he will grow up to be more like his father in several other ways. The only difference Connell (my son) and his father (Alexander) have is their eyes as Connell inherited my gold coloured eyes. 

Taking Connell into my arms I think back to why we named him that - 

6 months ago

 "Come on love just one more push and we'll have our son in our arms!" I gave one more big push and felt as my child, my son made his way into the world. The room was silent, there was no newborn cry or cries of happiness from me or Alexander, only confusion and concern for our son. 

"What's happening? Why isn't he crying? Is he okay?" I called out as the doctors took my son away to find out what was wrong with him. I began to cry and felt Alexanders arm come around my shoulders to pull me into his chest. Just as I began to feel Alexander beginning to tremble a small desperate, shrilling cry filled the room. Hope-filled our hearts at the sound and our tears dried as the doctor came over with the crying creature and laid him on my chest.

Alexander and I just stared at the ting being who was now calmly asleep on my chest, as it turned out that our son had somehow managed to get fluid into his lungs causing him to not be able to breathe as he was born. We decided to name him Connell as it means 'strong as a wolf' and Connell, well he's our little wolf pup.

Thinking back to that memory I'm filled with both sorrow at what we almost lost and great happiness at what we gained, our son. As if sensing where my thoughts were I felt as Alexander came up behind me and put his arms around Connell and me, as if nothing could harm us as long as we all stayed in each other's arms.  

Remembering the call I received just before Alexander and Connell came home I kissed Connell on the head before turning around in Alexander's arms, the moment he saw my face he knew that I had to go get that man from the bar or wherever else he had decided to go this time.

"Let me come with you Averna," Alexander stated with a pleading look in his eyes as if begging me to just leave Jasper (that man) be and stay with him and Connell. However, in his eyes, you could also see the resignation that he knew I wouldn't.

"You know I can't. I have to go get him then come back and get changed for work, and besides, I need you here to look after the kids while I'm not here. You know how I feel about leaving them on their own..." I trailed off as we both know he knew exactly why! 

"Okay," He said dejectedly whilst pouting just like our son does when he's upset, oh how adorable they are when they do that. 

With that said I gave Connell another kiss on the head before giving Alexander a light peck on the lips, whilst handing him Connell whose head was starting to grow limp on my shoulder. As I placed my hand on the doorknob I turned to look at my mate once more before I left for...
