Harry (Your POV) – “What the fuck,” you groaned groggily as your alarm went off. You felt absolutely dreadful; it hadn’t even felt like you’d been sleeping for more than an hour. You contemplated getting up and ready for work but you decided to call in sick. You felt ill, tired and Harry had been away on tour for three months now and you were lonely and feeling sorry for yourself. You phoned your manager who was completely unsympathetic, as usual, and the second you hung up your phone and lay back down you were sound asleep again. You woke up with a start and checked your phone for the time, your eyes widened as you saw the amount of missed calls and messages you had, but your jaw almost hit the floor when you realized it was 5pm. You had slept for nearly eighteen hours and the thing that made it worse was that you felt like you could lie back down and sleep for another eighteen. You forced yourself up out of bed and rubbed your tired eyes as you made your way through to the bathroom. You glanced at yourself in the mirror to find your skin was a pale grey color and the circles under your eyes were very dark. You hadn’t been feeling your best lately and you had been sleeping a lot but as time was going on, things were getting worse and worse. You hadn’t been eating much and your weight had gone down quite a bit, but looking at yourself in the mirror now, your stomach looked really bloated and your hands and feet looked slightly chunkier as well. You shrugged your shoulders, putting all of the symptoms down to the stress of work and the fact that you really missed Harry before going to make yourself something to eat and replying to the various different messages on your phone. You had a few missed calls from Harry but when you tried to call him back it rang out, you then phoned Gemma back and when she answered she sounded really worried. “Are you okay Y/N?” she asked frantically. “Yeah I’m fine, why?” you laughed in reply. “It’s just then when you weren’t answering earlier Harry got really worried and asked me to check on you, do you want to hang out tonight?” she asked, sounding a lot calmer. “Yeah sounds good, you can come here and we can order pizza or something?” you asked and she agreed and half an hour later she was knocking at your door. You opened the door and her jaw dropped. “Y/N, you look absolutely fucking dreadful,” she gaped at you and you rolled your eyes and laughed. “Aw thank you Gemma, that’s so kind,” you replied and she knitted her eyebrows together in concern. “No Y/N, seriously, are you feeling okay?” she asked and you shrugged. “I’ve been feeling tired and a bit nauseated lately but I just think it’s because I’m a bit stressed.” She walked into the apartment and took her jacket off before replying, “no Y/N, I really think you should see a doctor, you look awful and I wouldn’t be doing my job as your friend if I didn’t insist on making you go. I’ll go with you if you want, since Harry’s not here,” she said and you groaned, admitting defeat. “Fine, I’ll go if it will mean you’ll let this go. But please don’t tell Harry anything about it because I don’t want him worrying for no reason.” Gemma reluctantly agreed and after an evening of catching up and eating Pizza, you decided she might as well just stay the night because you were both going to need to be up early the next day if she was going to come to the doctors with you anyway. Your alarm blared at 8am and you felt a hundred times worse than you had the day before, if that was even possible. You called your doctor and managed to get an appointment for 9am so you and Gemma got yourselves up and ready before making your way to the doctor’s office. You sat down and the doctor looked over at you, giving you a warm smile with a look of genuine concern behind her eyes before she asked what she could do for you. “Well I’ve just been feeling tired and nauseous lately, I’ve lost a bit of weight but my stomach is bloated and my hands a feet are a bit swollen. I don’t look very well either,” you laughed a little but the doctor looked at you, concern more apparent in her features now. “Okay Y/N, what I’m going to do is take a blood sample for some testing just to rule out anything serious, but it does sound a lot like stress. But we do have to be safe and check every other alternative.” You nodded as she prepared the needles to take the sample. “Okay, so can you book an appointment for a few days time so we can go over your results?” you nodded and thanked the doctor before booking an appointment on your way out. “See, I told you it was just stress,” you laughed at Gemma and she rolled her eyes laughing a little bit in return. “I’m just praying your blood tests are okay,” she replied, “should we call Harry and tell him about all of this yet?” she asked. “No!” you answered immediately, “there’s no point in worrying him when he’s so far away and can’t do anything about it anyway!” Gemma sighed but agreed and when a few days had passed and it was time for your second appointment, she insisted on coming with you. The doctor greeted you as you made your way into her room. “Okay Y/N, are you sure you’re comfortable with me going over your results with your friend here?” she asked and there was something about the tone of her voice that really started to worry you. “Yeah, it’s fine,” you replied and the doctor sat down across from you and gave you a sympathetic look. “Your bloods have shown high levels of Urea as well as high levels of Creatinine. Your Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate was also very low,” her tone was serious and quiet as she spoke. She might as well have just told you everything she had just said in a different language for all it meant to you. “And that means…” Gemma encouraged and the doctor put her papers down and placed her hands in her lap. “It means, Y/N, I’m afraid your kidneys have gone into failure, we’re not sure why. Sometimes these things happen for unexplained reasons, but I’m going to need to refer you to see a specialized renal physician to discuss how we’re going to tackle this but until then, I will also have to prescribe you some medication…” You had completely zoned out while the doctor was speaking and you could feel your eyes beginning to sting slightly. Kidney failure… it was something you hadn’t even considered. You had always been so healthy; you didn’t understand how something like this could happen to you. Gemma continued speaking to the doctor, you were so thankful she had insisted on coming with you because you were sure you wouldn’t have been able to handle this alone. You took your prescription from the doctor and made your way out, still not having uttered a word and Gemma took your hand in hers and squeezed it tightly. “Don’t worry Y/N, you’re going to make it through this. You’re stronger than you know,” she said softly after you had gotten into your car and you immediately broke down in tears and you felt Gemma’s arms wrap around you in an attempt to comfort you. Now you had to find a way to tell Harry.
