••Owen's POV••

Every time I drive past Madison's house on the way to Autumns school, it tempts me more and more to just pull in the drive way, watch her walk from her house and jump in the front seat of my truck. I'd do anything for her, she doesn't realize what she is to me and I don't think I do either. We have had some time away from each other since I had just moved back, but I know her. She's always been my childhood best friend. I just want to drive anywhere with her, windows rolled down, music loud. I've decided that Madison and I will grow closer as friends and eventually, I will make her more than that.

I am always finding myself regretting not telling Madison about the type of people my sister and I are. Theres  reasons as to why I'm so mature for my age, and why my sister and I look nothing alike, besides the fact we both have ivory skin, dark hair and bright eyes. Her eyes are sky blue, her hair is a lush red and her face is dusted in little freckles. There's not one freckle on my body, my eyes are a forest green and I have dark brown hair. Emotionally, she is my sister, but not biologically.

When my parents were killed in a terrible car accident, I was in the back seat. We had gone into a full on collision with a driver going the opposite direction and our car flipped out of control. I was rushed to the hospital and I was dying. Several ribs were broken, parts of my spine were fractured, vital organs were punctured, and way too much internal bleeding for my seventeen year old human self to handle.

A nurse from the hospital took me home with her one evening and I remember waking up on a small bed in her home. In the bed next to me was Autumn and she was suffering from leukemia. The nurse returned to the bedroom and surprisingly, I wasn't scared at all. Something about her was comforting to me. She leaned over my body and told me that what she was about to do required me to stay still, and that I was going to live.

What she did next caused me complete unbearable pain that lingered through my body in waves. Her mouth was attached to the nape of my neck where you would place your finger if you were trying to check your pulse. My heart was racing and slowing at the same time, every muscle in my body tensed but gradually, the pain slowed. She released her self from me and there were absolutely no marks of what just happened. I felt renewed. I laid on the bed for a while before I realized my body wasn't harmed anymore. The feeling was excruciating, but I'm just as I was before the car accident, if not, then better.

The nurse's name was Malinda Burns, she explained who she was, what she does, and what I am now. Malinda had transformed my being into an extremely rare, unknown race of people called Cold Ones. My senses became ever so keen, my agility was automatically improved. The skin on my body was now cold to the bone, I had no pulse anymore. Malinda was a nurse at the hospital part time, but occasionally she brought home children or teenagers she felt needed to be saved. There was no hope for me if it wasn't for her.

Malinda had told me there was not many more of these Cold Ones, that I am now in charge of Autumn and she is now my sister if anyone asks. We had all new papers for Autumn and forged a new birth certificate along with all other mandatory papers. Malinda Burns saved me, but also gave me a new life, a second chance. She supplied us with our apartment close to our new schools.

"Owen, you are not the same person you were before. You need to be responsible, learn to adapt to your new self. Control cravings, gain self control. Most importantly, teach all of those things to Autumn and make sure she understands. She's much younger and will have difficultly comprehending all of this. Have a good life and remember what I told you." Those were Malinda's last words to me and I will never forget them.

I was a Cold One now with new responsibilities. Autumn Greene was now my sister Autumn Williams and that was the last time I ever saw or heard from Malinda Burns.
